Its hard to improve this team

Created by: Boomer125
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 28, 2020
Published: Sep. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I mean no offense to Oil fans - there is just a lack of Quality assets (prospects & players) on this team that would have interest around the league that could be parlayed into better wingers , better F Depth. Draft capital is minimal and therefore not really worth shipping out picks - a couple bad contracts (Neal and Kassian) and then there is Russel ( quite movable but also useful but also very little interest around the league for this guy unless retention is attached.

Just 1 man's opinion - discuss

If your an Oil fan comment your suggestion to improve and get under the Cap.

If your not a fan politely comment an offer with return you'd have interest in.

Islanders need to shed salary to sign their players. Everyone on this board has him going for either a 6th-7th round pick. He has two years on his contract so if he doesn't fit another team will take him at the trade deadline. Russell is a 6/7 defenseman, Leddy is top 4. No comparison in skill set, Leddy is better. Find some other team to take your cap dump

I would rather Russell if I was you. Have you forgotten that you are still a rebuilding team? Russell is the perfect veteran for a rebuilding team. Some other team will gladly take him.

LA doesn't need to waste their time or money on a fringe D. They are looking for a LHD to play with Doughty, not a filler here or there who is counting $4 million against the salary cap in a flat cap year.

He has one year compared to Leddys two at a cheeper price.

Exactly, another team might take him. He is NOT the perfect veteran for this team. His salary cap hit kills his trade value, along with his modified no trade clause. Leddy has the experience that Russell doesn't have.

The term doesn't make a difference if he fills what they are looking for. Leddy is a top 4 D, Russell is a 6/7 even on Edmonton, who isn't know for have a good D.

Yes he is. Okay, he can play both sides, he blocks shots every game, and he is good defensively. Russell also has a good chunk of experience you know. Plus he is WAY cheeper to acquire than Leddy would be.

He wouldn’t be a 6/7 defence man on LA. I personally think that he would be great for them but another team will take him.

He won't be way cheaper to aquire than Leddy - NYI has about 10 days to get their RFAs sorted and move out cap - Leddy will be gone for a 6/7 round pick

I disagree, and if you guys say he is so good, and he is a top 4, and Russell is a 6/7 defence man, he would take more. Try more on the lines of maybe a second, or third.

It doesn't even matter what you think or what @kingsfaninSD thinks or what I think. McLellan loves Russell and the money / term make sense - just $1.5M salary next year and UFA after that. He's a veteran player who is fearless and plays with intensity, he's a good PKer and great in the room. Did I mention McLellan loves him?

Russell to LA is a distinct possibility.

Exactly! I 100% agree with that. Also he is a good veteran for the young players. It just makes too much sense.

It doesn't make a difference what the coach thinks, the GM is the one who makes the trades. I'm sure that McLellan likes McDaivid too but he isn't going to trade for him. It's funny how everyone says he is so good for the younger players, keep him on the Oilers then and have his experience help them.

For the Oiler fans of course! For LA it doesn't. The Oilers need to move his salary cap figure to try and get better. Many other NHL teams need to do the same thing due to the flat cap or internal salary cap that is set. Leddy will be had by a team for late round draft pick. The Kings can do that easily.

The GM isn't an island. He has a team of people that help make decisions and the coaching staff would absolutely be involved.
