There really doesn't. The main motivation for buying out Hank is not the little bit of savings this year. Most of the savings this year will just go straight into Alex Georgiev's pocket, with his next contract. The motivation for buying out Hank is Alex Georgiev commanding the playing time that he has with his performance the past few years. If not for AG, Hank would be a Ranger this season, but his performance has been too good for NYR to ignore and they absolutely love him. They want to see more. If anything, the Hank buyout indicates that nothing is coming involving Georgiev.

On the bright side, this means we'll see a lot fewer Georgiev to the Leafs proposals where they say he's not good and offer a 2nd and prospect for him.

Yeah, not a good trade for the Rangers here. The thing with Sather and Gorton is whenever they make moves like the Staal trade and the Hank buyout, they always have something cooking. Thats part of the way they do things. A move is never made just to make it or to free up space for contracts down the road (that's not how they think). There will be moves made on draft day. You will see guys like Smith, ADA, and Strome move. Maybe even a guy like Buchnevich or Howden. Rest assured, there's always something cooking when the Rangers make moves.
