Sorry, we wouldn't be trading either of those third-rounders to you even if Dermott was someone we wanted. The 2020 is the 65th overall this year and the 2021 is tied to Kyle Clifford.

Leafs aren't re-signing Clifford, supposedly.

As soon as he signs somewhere else, we'll be happy to talk about trading that pick.

Demers for Holl is exactly the kind of trade Arizona should be making, by the way. Good vision.

There is the slight snag, though, that it's not at all the type of trade the Leafs should be making.

It would be interesting to see the type of deal that could happen with a conditional pick to a separate team, though. I'm sure it's probably happened, but I can't think of a time off the top of my head.

This is smaller scale, so it's not that intriguing, but the idea behind it is getting the gears in my head turning.

I thought your response to me was quite funny and I was trying to be equally clever. I agree wholeheartedly that this isn't the kind of trade Toronto should be making.

The 2020 pick is Columbus's.... 83rd overall. And Toronto isn't re-signing Clifford, but the 2021 pick is certainly negotiable. And btw, why wouldn't LA be interested in Dermott? They only have one LD signed right now, and , while they have good prospects there, none of them are ready yet, I don't think. Just curious as to how Dermott is viewed outside of Toronto.

Sorry, my mistake on which pick the 2020 was/is. Careless of me not to look more carefully.

Dermott is worth the Columbus pick for sure. I just don't think he meshes well with our current set-up. The only 3 defensemen we have on the right who are NHL-quality are Doughty, Sean Walker and Matt Roy; if we traded either of the youngsters that would just be the start of a two-step process because we'd just have to go out and find a RD on the free-agent market, and there are a lot of other teams doing that right now. Our GM is on record as having said that we'd like to acquire a short-term LD veteran to provide some cover for Michael Anderson, Tobias Bjornfot and Kale Clague, but as you point out, the latter two are probably not ready for more than a 9-game audition and Anderson won't be contending for either the Calder or Norris Trophies. It wouldn't SHOCK me if we acquired Dermott, but I doubt that you'd be interested in anyone we were actually likely to part with, so it would only be for a draft pick or two, but two thirds is probably more than we have in mind.

Welcome to CapFriendly, by the way.

Here's my thinking on that. Yes, Demers is older and more expensive, but his contract is off the books after this season. Holl's (admittedly manageable) salary goes on for two more years after that, during which time Hyman, Andersen and Rielly all need new contracts. The hope is that with steady, sheltered third pairing minutes this year, Lillegren is ready to fill the role starting next season, so the loss of Holl won't matter.
