Too late now but they totally could have, hes only owed 2.4M so a retention is quite cheap.

They could have, but my point was why would they retain anything, for such a weak return. Then Poile goes and trades him to MIN for a garbage return, so what do I know? The Preds are frustrating me so much right now!

I think his ceiling is a 3rd liner. I'd rather still have 37OA over Kunin, even without the other pieces NSH sent in this deal.
