You aren't dumping a contract without a 2nd round pick. Boychuk will cost a 1st.

if erik gudbranson just brought back a 5th round pick i don't see why johnny boychuk, a good prospect, and a 4th couldn't do the same

the devils are in a clear rebuild and are in need of young talent (bellows) they can do so by taking on cap space given that they have about $25 mil in cap space. They could even absorb a portion of his contract and flip him again possibly because he is still a capable bottom pairing dman who brings a ton of leadership and experience
