Leafs Suddenly Have Too Many D

Created by: Leafs_Storm

Description
I personally would have Engvall in the roster over Vesey, Simmonds, or Barabanov, but Engvall is currently waiver-exempt and I could see the Leafs wanting to keep Bogosian up with the team instead of waiving him (despite better options until another trade occurs.)

Ultimately, due to having Bogo, the Leafs now have a bottom pair spare defenseman, along with Rosen, Marincin, Sandin, and Liljegren. That's 11 players who could slot into at least the 3rd pair, which is why I can foresee a Holl trade. However, without seeing how Dermott fits on the right side next to Muzzin or Rielly yet, it does not provide me confidence to do that.

Justin holl a top 4 guy? He’s a 3 paring guy at best even if Petro was his partner he still wouldn’t look good out there.

He was a solid top 4 guys last year. He played on the shutdown pair with Muzz. He won't score too much but he can definitely lock it down.

I think Dermott and Mikheyev will get a bit more money but this looks pretty solid otherwise

His results next to Muzzin all season were pretty good. Their xGF and actual GF were really solid together. He's not a guy you want carrying a pair, which was clearly evidenced once Muzzin got injured in both the regular season and play-in, but as the complementary guy on the pair, he does a solid, steady job.

Something I just noticed is that Korshkov currently has 11 pts in 12 games in the KHL. He will make an actual push for the Leafs also. Makes things even more complicated to work out!

As for D pairings - I assume it will be:

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Lehtonen
Dermott or Sandin - Bogosian or Holl

Maybe send Sandin down and either run 7 or alternate Dermott, Bogo and Holl every game, until their competence hierarchy becomes apparent.

$874,125 is Dermott's Qualifying Offer. I think the leafs are going to squeeze him hard, and a 1 year deal at the QO is probably the best outcome for both parties. Mikheyev I predict around $1.3M, but again, the Leafs are really going to squeeze him on that contract so I pushed for an even 1M so that the roster could take 2 spares instead of just 1.

Korshkov and Engvall are in the AHL/KHL in this version of the roster, but I agree that Korshkov will be pushing for a roster spot this year. I want Lehtonen in the top 4, but I'm keeping it conservative on him until we see his game on a North American-sized ice sheet. I think both Sandin and Liljegren, as well as Engvall and Korshkov could start in the AHL/KHL just based on waiver eligibility, and wanting to see what they have in Simmonds, Vesey, Lehtonen, and Barabanov.

He's a 4/5 guy, who should be on a bottom pair, but is a very solid as just a steady, complimentary piece with a better partner. His results next to Muzzin were solid all season, but with Muzzin hurt, the results expectedly dipped and he looked overmatched in a shutdown role without him. I think we've seen that they work together, and I don't see a need to change it unless somebody forces Keefe's hand, but I have no qualms with him in that role as long as healthy Muzzin is next to him.

Muzzin with his working horse attitude would make even you and me look good next to him....on NHL level that is.....

Holl is No6 D at best and 1M overpaid for the quality he brings, but at least you didnt trade him for a 3rd like TML homers usualy do....

Did you see how many guys got hurt last year on our blue line? You simply cannot have too many NHL level D, especially considering how cheap we are getting like half of them for

Clearly if you think that, you've never seen my Jack Johnson-esque ability to destroy a pairing, and that's in beer league. I think Holl would be a good 5D, he's big enough and competent enough to be at least a 5D. 4D is when the competition improves, he got lots of d-zone starts, and it was clear that with Muzzin he could handle it. When it was him and Dermott and he needed to carry more of the responsibility, they couldn't be a shutdown duo. 4/5D is i think accurate, but it would be nice if he wasn't making 2M a year.
