Holy crap I hate this trade

Created by: Hawkisles
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 12, 2020
Published: Oct. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Toews is a top 4 guy now and had top pairing potential. Neither of those picks will get a return that even resembles that.
2. Our left side on defense just got a lot worse, and now we’re pretty much forced to keep Leddy, who was our best option for a trade that could drop cap without throwing away future assets. Losing Leddy through waivers would have been better on all fronts than this.
3. Those 2nd Rounders will, at best, be used to drop a bad contract, but I feel like we have enough prospects in our system where if a team demanded the equivalent of 2 2nd rounders in futures, we could have supplied that.
3. Even from a cap clearing perspective, Toews was the one who wanted the least money. Trading Pulock would have been the better option. There are more right shots still on the market, he would have yielded a much better return and we still have Wilde and Dobson to replace him in the long term. You can’t tell me Aho or Bolduc will effectively fill in for Toews, short or long term.

Then he goes to arbitration which could b a yikes, maybe I’m thinking too far into the future, although not looking far enough in the future is what’s screwing us now

fair point, but this is the franchise 1C were talking about lol - i can't imagine this regime is dumb enough to push out barzal by not allowing him to have a bit more freedom. FWIW this season barzal had more offensive freedom - his line is the only line that doesn't have to dump and chase.

That is true, the way he carries himself worries me compared to his rookie year. He doesn’t rly seem to buy into the whole brotherhood thing like everyone else on the team does. He also always seems pissed. Could j b me being paranoid tho

Like I said it might j me being paranoid, but I think he liked Doug Weight. Weight gave him a lot of lenience and offensive creativity.

Weight benched him a few times and even called him out post game. I 100% believe barzal wants to have more freedom, do I think it will prevent him from signing long term with the isles ? Nah. Like I said there has to be a compromise. Lou and trotz have never had to deal with a player like him.

I guess that’s true. I probably shouldn’t worry so much. This Toews trade still got me shook

Yeah , one of the worst isles trades of the last 10-15 years. You can’t even justify that return and giving up your best puck moving D .

What do you think the plan with Aho is? Obviously Dobson is penciled in for a spot next season

I don’t think they will play him but I’m holding out hope we do. Ig a dcore of

    Pelech-Pulock
    Leddy (rip Toews)-Dobson
    Aho-Mayfield

wouldn’t be bad. But Greene prob takes a top 6 spot w Aho as a scratch

Aho has to pass through waivers - there’s no way he gets waived , right? He has the most PP QB upside than any other D. Aho can play both sides btw

I don’t think he plays in bport. My guess is 7D, but I hope that isn’t the case

He wouldn’t clear waivers, which is my point. They can’t send him to BPT

But he wouldn’t clear - that’s almost as reckless as trading Toews. Dobson would be their only great puck mover

Lou seems to be okay w being reckless w youngsters. In reality tho, maybe Aho gets a full time lineup chance in the middle of the year, I’d b ok w that

I agree with you , Lou isn’t great with asset management , but this would be taking it to a new extreme. This team needs puck movers. Because Aho can play both sides, an injury to any D man would get him in the lineup

That’s true, I’d also say they maybe add him as a sweetner to dump a bad contract, maybe. That’s another possibility. If he’s not traded tho, there’s a good chance he’s our 7D

Aho is very similar to toews in play style (although he won’t be better than toews), and I’m hoping his age and hockey IQ makes trotz trust him immediately. I’m pretty sure toews wasn’t sheltered after he got called up in December 2018.

Also, we cannot trade wilde after trading Toews. He’s our best shot at an elite PP QB

I think bolduc is at least 2 years away, but I’m hoping for this by 2021-22:

    Pelech-dobson
    Aho-pulock
    Greene?-wilde

Yeah that’s why I put a question mark - maybe Greene retires. He’s still an above average 3rd pairing D, I just wouldn’t play him any higher up in the lineup. If he’s still got it next year, why not.

Bottom pairing dman. I feel like a lot of isles fans r rly high on him but idk I’m rly not. Not that that would b a bad thing but I think isles fans r putting a lot of expectations on him

I think bottom pair as well but a lot of scouts see 2nd pairing D after his great season. I have a lot more faith in Aho - I think he can be a stud
