you let Landeskog hit the UFA market, there is no guarantee he waits for the Avs. Look at what happened to the Blues with Pietrangelo. Do not mess around with this kind of things.
Dont be foolish with this
Ok, protect Landeskog then...
- Mackinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Kadri
- Makar, Girard, Toews, Weegar
- Grubauer
Let's say that Seattle pick Burakovsky. That would be annoying, but oh look we suddenly have $4.9m in capspace now.... And oh look, Brandon Saad has done well with us this season and he's an UFA, let's just resign him.... Or we could sign any number of UFA's who would love to play for Colorado and win a cup. For example: Palmieri, Nugent-Hopkins, Hall, Schwartz, Gusev, Tatar, Hyman,... Alternatively I'm sure Sakic could find another good trade to acquire a top 6 forward, something he's been extremely proficient at doing (see: Kadri, Burakovsky, Saad trades).
Point is that whilst we might lose a slightly better player than Graves, it would hardly be insurmountable. And the upgrade from Cole to Weegar this season might be worth it. The only snag here would be the price it would take to move Cole, and the price it would take to acquire Weegar. But if neither is prohibitive then it's certainly something to consider.
