Close to final team

Created by: nics6ix
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 15, 2020
Published: Oct. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Although it is a 21 man roster, emergency call ups allow for any team with under a 20 man available roster to call up players who are under 800K or less to play in that game and not count towards the cap.

In this case, I have Sandin being the 1 scratch and jumping in and out of the lineup with Bogosian. If injuries do occur, Sandin can step in as his money is already accounted for as a scratch, and then Calle Rosen is also another D who can play under the 800K mark and not count towards the cap if need be.

For forwards, Barabonov is the 13th forward in this case and can be brought up into the NHL or reassigned to the AHL without clearing waivers as he is waiver exempt. At forward depth under the 800K price they have Malgin and Boyd who are decent 4th line options if two short term injuries occur in which player cannot be put on LTIR.

Carrying a 21 man roster has its risks, but Dubas has found players under 800K that he feels confortable playing (Rosen, Malgin, Boyd, Petan) if in fact they go below the 20 man roster. With a 21 man roster, the Leafs can open up the ability to grab that last much needed 3rd line winger and complete their offseason.

If I was Toronto I wouldn’t add haula. There’s no real need for him. Obviously one more good depth piece would be useful but then save a mil or two for TDL

Although Haula has been really inconsistent, I think a major part of that is his poor luck in his injuries over his career. Obviously like I mentioned before injuries do occur and the Leafs have been adding depth for this reason, but looking at the best option right now if everyone is healthy, I think Haula adds great penalty killing and is a phenomenal two-way player - granted if he stays healthy.

If the leafs do add a 3C, I would expect that it would be for 2 mill or under and that Kerfoot would be out the door. Soderberg, Galchenyuk, and Brassard are also some other options besides Haula. However, Haula may be the best option for Robertson and Robertson needs a playmaking centre so I think Haula or Galchenyuk are more likely the better options should it come to that. However, if the leafs want to get bigger and more defensively sound they should target Soderberg imo. However, I do think this would result in Robertson spending another year in juniors and Vesey or Barbanov playing on the LW beside Soderberg
