Seguin Replacement

Created by: TheMooterus
Team: 2020-21 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 16, 2020
Published: Oct. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Theoretically, this would benefit Dallas a ton in the short-medium term. With Seguin being out for a couple of months, Dallas could use someone to fill his role in the top-6. Even when he returns, Johnson would be a solid piece to have over any of the top-3 lines.

Dallas would also have the money to spend on Heiskanen the following season. With them having roughly $23M to spend on Heiskanen & filling out the remaining 5 roster spots that will be vacant following the 2020-2021 season.

With Seguin likely out until at least March while recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip. Johnson fits right into the Stars top-6, and can remain there even when Seguin returns from injury.

Does Tyler Johnson have more value? Absolutely. But given Tampa's cap difficulties, they are going to have to take pennies on the dollar in order to move his contract & give up an additional asset in order to move him. The argument could be made that Tampa may have to give up a 1st Round Pick in order to move him, but with a slightly above 20% retention, the 1st would be overkill.

seems like a good all-around fit, id just be worried about his 4 years at 4m with the upcoming contracts for klingberg and heiskanen. Im not a stars fan tho so i could be totally off lol

I wouldn't oppose acquiring Johnson in a better cap situation, but those bonus overages need to be paid and with Seguin coming off LTIR eventually we're absolutely f*cked in that regard.

Ideally I'd want them to have no overages for 2021-22 season since they need to re-sign Heiskanen and they need all the money they can muster for that.

If you think Tampa would've been able to get a first for him, then why didn't they trade him before he went on waivers? Nobody is helping the Tampa cap situation unless Tampa is willing to pay for that help.

That's why I left over $10M in cap space (Cogliano buyout helped). The Stars have the smallest bit of cap space after Seguin is taken off of LTIR. Bonuses could be an issue, yes, but in this scenario, Dallas has $23M to spend next offseason. Let's assume Miro gets an 8x8 deal. That leaves Dallas with $15M to fill 5 roster spots left by Oleksiak, Comeau, Pysyk, Fedun, and Dowling, all of the roster spots are likely replaceable by the kids in our farm system:

Oleksiak ---> Harley
Comeau ---> Caamano
Pysyk ---> Shea
Fedun ---> Gleason
Dowling ---> Any of our older AHL forwards that can sit in the press box as a 13th/14th forward

This should give Dallas anywhere between $8-9M to sign Kiviranta & Gardner as well as cover any potential overages the team may face
