How To Be Currently Compliant

Created by: Ludy

Initial Creation Date: Oct. 16, 2020

Description
How the current Leafs could be compliant on opening night.

I have Engvall as a scratch, however he would start in the minors as he is waiver exempt currently. They would easily accrue the $11k of cap during those days then you could bring Engvall up rounding out 13 forwards.

Also, can't see Spezza AND Thorton not being dressed for opening night, especially based on last years events

Many may think that Dermott and Soup being signed for a million is to low. However, Dubas has already said he is fine with Soup if it goes to arbitration based on comparables. Comparables would actually indicate it may even be less than a million, and if that happens, because Soup is the one who filed for Arb, the leafs can make that a 2 year deal.

That is why I assume they will announce a 1 year - $1M before the hearing.

Dermott is an RFA with no arbitration rights. The Leafs already held all the power in this before Covid and with so many D still on the market, he has absolutely no bargaining power.

Robertson starts on the 4th line for opening night, with two passing veterans, can't be a bad introduction to the league. I assume he will climb up the roster very fast.

Obviously, once the 2nd or 3rd game of the season starts, I assume Engvall will be brought up and maybe the 4th line roates, especially with potential 3 games in 4 nights during this condensed coming season.

I think Robertson gets 9 games and goes back to the O.

Then you can have Boyd or Anderson at 700k ish

If Robertson isn't in the top 9 they don't play him in the NHL.

But I think he'll be a mainstay on that 3rd line with potential to move into top 6

I like it!! The most reasonable and best post I’ve seen by a Leafs fan in a while. The leafs offered Dermott 895k already. He might sign that offer sheet. He might not even nickel and dime them up to 1M/yr. If another team offers him 1.395M or above, they have to give up a 3rd round Pick as compensation. And the Leafs would 100% take that 3rd round pick and let him walk then.

Every other posts has Barabnov starting too. It’s hard for me to imagine two 1st year, Russian players coming in and starting on A contenting, play-off team. That’s a lot to ask. Especially since Mikheyev is a lot bigger than Lehtonen and Barabnov. Barabanov especially is smaller. And both play the Russian way. Soft and fast. With the bigger Ice RInk in Russia. It usually takes some time for them to adjust to the NHL game, the smaller rink, is a huge difference, but isn’t even the biggest difference. And plus, getting accustomed to everything off the Ice too. Like I said, that’s just a lot of faith to have in two 1st year guys that have never played a play in the NHL yet. So, I like you just having Lehtonen on your 3rd defensive pairing too. Seeing he’s the better of the 2 players anyways. Atleast the more highly touted. I guess we will see who is better..lol.

I agree. I think opening night he may get a start there but will he in middle 6 for sure 10 games in I bet.

I can see Robertson playing the LW on the 2nd line and Mikheyev playing on that 3rd line LW and Vesey on the 4th line LW. Toronto definitely needs that entry-level contract of a young play-making forward.

I mean he's not a play-making forward. Small guy who's fast, plays hard, and is a pure goal scorer. 55 goals in 46 games in the OHL last year. But I agree with what you are saying. Though I do think Mikheyev starts on 2nd line and Robertson on 3rd but we'll see. So much competition on the Leafs depth chart this year that really anything can happen.

He has outplayed the O. It'd be better for him to go to Europe if he can't crack the Leafs top 9. But I think he'll be a middle six fixture in the lineup next year. We'll see though

Dermott is worth way more than a 3rd. I've also never seen someone offer sheet that low. I believe Dubinsky was offer sheeted about 3 million like a decade ago. Lowest I can recall

Edited to correct. It was Bernier not Dubinsky.

If another team offers Dermott 1.395M or above. It’s very, very unlikely that the Leafs match that offer. They would just take the 3rd round Pick compensation and be happy. You do know Nate Schmidt was just traded for a 3rd round pick and is way more valuable than Dermott. yes, Toronto loses a player, but a player who is eligible for arbitration next year and will for sure take it to a arbitration hearing if they offer 895k again. So, they will lose a player they mostly likely can’t afford.

Absolutely, however, I also know Dermott loves being here. I doubt he would leave for an extra 400k over 1 year. Never know though

He’s got an offer of 895k. I really think he will accept that offer eventually..he probably won’t even nickel and dime them up to a 1M offer. So, If another team gave him a 1.4M offer it would be 500k more. He leaves..lol
