Why are Vegas trading you a haul for an old Tavares rather than signing a younger Barkov for free?

In order to free up space for Tavares, they’d have to get rid of huge pieces of their team and realistically the Knights aren’t built properly to take on a contract like this for awhile. They have a bunch of big money guys at forwards and with the Pietrangelo signing being long term, I don’t see this happening.

Think of the functionality of this trade.

If Barkov is a free agent, no one is trading for a center like Tavares before he's signed. Anyone in on trading for Tavares is in on signing Barkov for free first. At that point you'd be way over the cap after signing Barkov and have absolutely no leverage to trade Tavares with. You'd have less ground to stand on than Tampa currently has. You'd get nothing in return, and likely have to give up significant assets to move a big contract like JT, not a haul like this.

No one is going to throw you a rope after you've drowned yourself with Barkov's deal.

Beyond that, given the current cap you have left, I have serious doubts you didn't exceed the 10% overage cap in the 22-23 offseason after signing Barkov considering the 20 man roster.

Pretty sure that there's no 2021 picks to be moved three years in the future.
