Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 16, 2020
Published: Dec. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
CAR
  1. Fleury, Marc-André
  2. 2022 5th round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Canes get a great goalie who will move from one market of love into the next. Its a shame that they couldn't fit the cap as Vegas is too desperate for a 2/3 Centre.
VGK
  1. Dzingel, Ryan
  2. Mattheos, Stelio
  3. Reimer, James
  4. 2021 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Vegas gets a cable back up goalie in Reimer who during the playoffs showed he can still be a solid backup. Ryan Dzingel cleans up the #2 centre position if for some reason Glass isn't ready. Small prospect and pick swap.

Is it an upgrade in net though? Reimer had a significantly better season than Fleury last year and at this point Fleury is old enough where you wonder if he's just cooked. Seems like a lot to give up for what may or may not be an upgrade and you'll be saddled with Fleury's contract while trying to re-sign Svechnikov.

I think take Dzingel and Mattheos out, put a small retainment on Fleury (approx. 30-35%), and give us a 2021 1st, and we'll accept. I don't think that we add Fleury for Reimer unless it's a net cap and draft asset add for us.

While I don't disagree that Reimer's post season numbers were great, he is much more suited to a backup role. Fleury on the other hand is a goalie who does better when he plays more and behind one of the best D cores in Carolina, I feel like he could be a top 5 goalie with the switch

I actually agree with you on this. The second year salary's prohibitive, though, UNLESS there's good draft compensation for that second year. Then the Canes would gladly accept, I think. Our FO has no issues with some cap gymnastics if the pick offer is sweet enough.

I mean even Reimer's regular season numbers were a full nine points ahead of Fleury's last year and he costs half as much. I agree that Reimer is better as backup, but I'm not sure how much leaning you're going to be able to do on Fleury to be a starter. Vegas is not Carolina, but it's not like their defense was bad and Fleury was a scapegoat. Fleury was bad last season.

Gotta follow the mantra- don't pay for saves. Even if you get some compensation, the teams that pay big money for goalies always end up regretting it. Goalies can swing so wildly from season to season that it's not worth it to pay a goalie so much. Look at Bobrovsky, look at Price, look at Fleury himself- he's only one year into this extension and Vegas already replaced him because Fleury was actively costing them games.

If Reimer is awful next season- which he probably won't be- at least he's done after next year and you can figure something else out. You really don't want to be saddled with a 36 year old Fleury at seven million next year.

This deal helps out VGK too much IMO. They are stuck with that MAF contract until they are ready to pay to get out from underneath it. Trading Remier and Dzingle who are both UFA's after this year for two years of MAF at 7 AAV isnt a smart move for the canes
