Why do all Habs trades include DD? Teams do not want to take DD as cap dump just so Montreal can sign other players. Same for Fehr from Pittsburg, Sbisca from Vancouver, Sheehan from Detroit.
Yup cause the Hurricanes really coveted Bryan Bickell. Arizona just couldn't wait to get Bolland......... taking on cap dumps are smart moves if you get a worthy pick/prospect in return. Don't confuse "cap dump" with "take my worst player off our hands for nothing cause you're stupid". These teams are paying a price to rid themselves of those players.
If Toronto wants to get rid of Laich, all they have to do is add a 2nd rounder to the deal and take a 900K AHL'er back in return and you got a deal. Smart teams realize that you can buy draft picks and prospects now. Just have to formulate it in the form of a "cap dump". The thing is Toronto doesn't need to make this trade. They want to keep their draft picks and can afford to let Laich waste away in the minors as they aren't contending for the cup this year.

only way they are getting rid of DD is they are taking a slightly worse contract back.
Like for the Avs, if they can get rid of McLeod who is signed next year at 1.3m to be a healthy scratch for 3.5m for the rest of DD this year since hes a UFA. Something like that.
They had to do the same thing wtih Briere, moving 1 year left of him for 2 years of PAP (which they just ended up buying out after 1 year anyways)
I do agree that a trade of DD would more then likely be for a lesser contract in return but arguably a worse player like you mentioned. Regardless its not the only option. As stated above, adding a draft pick or prospect to a deal with DD for a small return makes perfect sense. Problem is convincing owner's who are hemorrhaging money with their teams to essentially pay liquid money and unused cap space for a pick/prospect. So maybe Carolina doesn't have the money right now to add DD because they seem to be in a bit of money troubles but a team like a MTL, FLO, T.O, could totally make this move and is smart for making it.
Then...................................we haven't even got to the point of saying that DD even isn't that bad. He isn't a Bickell or McLeod that you have to make the deal so sweet for a team to take him. DD is a proven pt producer. MTL has grown tired of him because of his use my our coach. He's not a 1C but our coach up until this year has played him like one but in a sheltered role he can still be effective. But make no mistake he's still a player capable of supplanting at least 1 roster player on most teams.
In the past 6 seasons he is the 76th highest PT scoring forward in the league. He's a capable player just not for this team anymore. Don't let the Habs bias convince you that he is worse then he actually is. He really isn't. He's just outstayed his welcome on this team but in a fresh start can be a steal. Not too mention that we'd be willing to throw in a draft pick in order to give us some cap flexibility to go all in for a star rental player considering we're looking to be a contender again this year.
And even if your not convinced, you put him on waivers and if someone takes him, good on ya but if not, you send him to the minors where he'll be your top center who easily improve your farm team. Also, the team wants to maximize the amount of cap they will be saving but if they really need to, they can even retain some salary in order make it work for both sides.
Too much is made of DD, I can be guilty of this as well but in all honesty we're making way too much of it. He's really not that bad. The fact that he is a Francophone makes it a little more delicate as he is our most prominent hometown player. We just need that cap space this year to get a top end talent player for the cup run, which we'll have to pay a premium to get.
