Washington isn’t weakening their D or trading a 2nd for a backup goalie. Vanecek is perfectly fine playing backup, as is Samsonov as a starter.

I have been against the Caps bringing in another goalie, unless the cost is low enough. Jensen, 2nd for Rittich is a little too much from the Caps side. A big reason being that none of the Capital's current goalie as waiver exempt, except Samsonov who is slated to be the starter. So, in this situation the Caps would have to waive either Riitich or Vanecek, either of which would get grabbed by someone. So they either threw away a 2nd (and Jansen) for no reason, or lost Vanecek.
