I believe they're concerned someone would grab him, specifically the devils or caps. Another possibility is that one of the other goalies is dealing with a nagging injury that might carry risk of having to place someone on IR.
Possibly. I'm just trying to guess what the reasoning is for keeping him on the roster.
Oh, I absolutely agree that they think that delaying for a couple days would reduce the chances that he would get claimed - and they are correct the chances will drop a little. There was a 100% chance he would have been claimed if was waived yesterday. But a week from now it probably drops to only a 99.5% chance he gets claimed. NJ claimed Comrie (a 25 year old with 8 games experience) to be their backup for their 24 year old starter (with 70 games of experience). Not a good pairing and they could use some experience. So, in my view, they either keep him on the roster for the year or they lose him. (I would opt for the latter choice).

Is really that good though? I think there's a good change he passes unclaimed if they wait, considering the talent that cleared waivers. But I agree, he would have been claimed by the devils if they didn't wait.

I don't see any reason why the devils wouldn't simply also put in a claim for Dell? They wouldn't even have to put Comrie on waivers to do so as they have loads of cap space and can carry 23 on the roster. To me Comrie was a claim to get the season started, but they will want another goalie as their actual backup. And that is just the Devils. They are not the only team with that need this season.

Well, then I guess the leafs will be without Aaron Dell, because otherwise they can't play Lehtonen really.

If they kept Dell on the roster and everything went perfectly they would be able to bring Lehtonen in 60% of the time. But things won't go perfectly. Of course, on the first game of the season a Leaf with a major contract could get injured for the season and then they would have more than enough LTIR cap space to keep 23 players on the roster.

Well, they can have Lehtonen, but they have to have either only 11 forwards, which makes no sense, or waive Dermott, which makes less sense.

Well no, they have 567K of cap space remaining if they their current lineup of 20 plus Dell. Because that cap space accrues they can afford to also have Lehtonen's 925K cap hit on the roster about 60% of the time (which incidentally would allow them to have him for almost every game).
