Ask your coach what he thinks.
Ask your GM if he thinks the deal allows them to improve their team. Ask Sakic if Graves is more valuable in the press box or in exchange for assets and cap space to improve the team.
This transaction allows for another transaction to improve this team. There will not be a bidding war to take on salary even for a player like Graves (who isn’t anything truly elite)
Trading a player you like is never easy. But in real life trading someone who is unhappy or not a fit makes the decision easier. Especially when you can improve your team from it.
This deal makes sense. I’m not saying they accept, because they might want to hold on for a while and see how the situation plays out. But the Pens offer this and I think if things continue as they are then Sakic does this in anticipation of other moves. Also, long-term it could allow them to keep more of their core players.
The fact that Graves is still on this team shows you what Bednar and Sakic think. If they thought a 2nd round pick would help the team Graves would already have been moved to any number of teams who would love to add a top 4 LHD at $3m aav.
As for the transaction, Avs can improve the team without moving Graves as well, as we have plenty of capspace and futures to use instead of worsening our defensive depth.
As for players being unhappy, there's no indication that Graves is unhappy or not a fit in Colorado. In fact, last year he specifically said around the trade deadline that it would suck to be traded away, because he really likes it in Denver.
Lastly, when you're a fan of another team and suggest a trade, and every single fan of the Avs repeatedly declines, why would you keep beating a dead horse and insisting that the trade is good? Avs fans unanimously disagree. Though I'm grateful that you've made an AGM with a trade proposal for one of our players, it's always interesting to see new ideas!! You might want to revise your offer though.
