The money makes sense, Severson saves them a little bit of cap room and is signed a little longer than Reilly.

In terms of the players, Reilly holds more value to the Leafs and won't be moved. They'll figure out how to get him extended.

Point is that Severson is a good RHD who is not Reilly in terms of offensive production, but he is way better defensively. This would open spots for Sandin, Dermott, Lehtonen. I think Reilly is pretty much Barrie - a powerplay specialist. Sandin, Lehtonen can be that.

Not much point in discussing this as you've got an obvious Rielly bias here, but if you can't tell he's better than Barrie, you really don't understand hockey.

Rielly has his warts, but 9.5 out of 10 hockey fans know Rielly >> Severson overall. You literally have a 2nd coming to Leafs in the trade, so Rielly having more value = Rielly being the better player. Right??

Severson has had one decent season, prior to that NJ spent years trying to get other RHD because Severson couldn't fit the bill of a top pair Dman.

Also, he's not some great shutdown dman, he's a decent all-around defender.

Also, RD is no longer a huge weakness for the Leafs. Brodie & Holl are capable top 4 dmen.
