What the Rangers took very much into account when signing Kreider to a seven year contract with the first four years having a full NTC, is that Kreider physically is in the top tier athletically of all NHLers regardless of his age.
Kreider also dedicates his life physically, mentally, etc, to being the best hockey player he could possibly be, much more so than most other NHLers. I believe the Rangers think Kreider will continue to improve his game over the next few years and then remain at that level for the remainder of his contract.
Though I question whether if the Rangers should offer Zibanejad a seven year contract extension or let him walk when his contract is up? With the contract extension starting when Zibanejad (like Kreider) is 29 years old, it might become an albatross around the Rangers neck halfway through the contract term. Which could very well likely be the case because Zibanejad is nowhere near being as athletic and durable as Kreider.
Sooo, Kreider is much more important to the Rangers than a 2nd round pick. If the Rangers were to actually approach Kreider (who's by far the biggest leader on the team) to waive his NTC, it would be for much more than a 2nd round pick.
