Matthews is the best player in the trade, but that’s too much for him. One player can’t carry a team to the cup. Ottawa isn’t giving their future for Toronto’s past.

Just fluff. None of that matters and is just deck chairs. Matthews I think is proving he is a generational talent and you just don't trade that. Ever.

Toronto's past? A 23 year old 40 goal scorer is the Leafs past? Wow.

Ottawa shouldn't sell the farm, and Toronto certainly will not move their franchise player for anything. End of story.

Yes it's Auston Matthews in the trade scenario, but it's the Toronto model I'm talking about, trading for stars instead of draft and development of star players. They are doing it right this time with Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Rielly, but they haven't always used the draft and development of stars method to this extent, and trading for the complimentary pieces instead. Having posted that, I'm expecting someone to ignore the point, and list players Toronto has drafted, completely missing the point.

Before anyone asks which stars they traded for before,
Phil Kessel (09-15)
Mats Sundin (94-08)
Doug Gilmour (92-97)

I'm not suggesting teams not make trades, but teams generally have more success developing their main stars, and trading for complimentary pieces.

Ottawa doesn't need to trade for a star player, they are drafting some of their own. They shouldn't be trading them away, as you agree, even if Matthews is a very good player.

My point was, Ottawa doesn't need to emulate Toronto's past to find their success.

That trade is TERRIBLE for Ottawa
That just makes them worse both in the present and the future

The fact that Matthews' contract takes him right to UFA is reason that Sens shouldn't trade for him, and reason Leafs should consider a trade.

I misunderstood, I see what you are saying now. I don't disagree, Ottawa shouldn't be parting with any of their young guys for anything right now, let them grow and develop.

Toronto does have a history of trading valuable pieces for other teams stars, it's worked out in some instances and not in others. The Kessel trade being obvious one that didn't work out.

Keep your young guys, let them grow together and hope they can do some damage in the future.
