Description
Looking more into Ottawa's salary structure, Pierre Dorion just loves overpaying for players.

Some of them are obviously irrelevant as they'll expire this year (Gudbranson, Stepan, Anisimov), but others are core players that are on deals that are too expensive for their level of play (White, Chabot, Dadonov). The hope is that they can grow their game to that level, but some bars are too high to reach (like asking Chabot to become worthy of an $8M deal). The reality of the Sens salary structure is that very few of their deals are actually appropriately priced, and even fewer are actually justifiably steals.

Based on their current level of play and their comparables, they should all be making less.

LW/LD/scratch is the player, C/RD/IR is the more appropriate salary based on the comparable in the RW/G/LTIR. Taxi holds the ELCs.

Chabot will be one Sens fans don't like to acknowledge, I'd guess, but he's been terrible this season despite strong point totals. He's a $7M offensive D but a $1M defensive D. Should probably be making $6M, but offensive D always make money. Can't wait until Tkachuk gets signed to a $9M deal or something ridiculously stupid when he only deserves ~$6.5M based on comparables.

I'll agree that Chabot's defensive game isn't where it needs to be, but I don't think it's entirely his fault, and I don't think it's holding him back from being an 8 mil defenseman.

Chabot has had no support his entire career, and as a result he has been massively overworked. Who's the best D partner Chabot has had? Probably Dylan DeMelo, and they really only had most of one season where they played together. After that it honest to God might be Cody Ceci, because his two other most common partners have been Ron Hainsey and Nikita Zaitsev. But just as important, who is the best Dman to play behind Chabot? Wolanin? Reilly? Borowiecki? Brannstrom has shown bits and pieces, but he's still just getting started. Nobody who you can point to and say "this guy is definitely a 2nd pair level defenseman" (though Brannstrom will definitely get there imo).

I think for the most part the answer to Chabot's defensive woes comes in the form of the good defensive core Ottawa is building. Once Chabot has a real, good D partner, and once they have guys capable of taking some of those minutes away from Chabot without the world ending, I think he will improve significantly. If you're able to scale back Chabot's minutes from the 25-28 minutes he gets a lot of the time to a consistent 23-24 minutes, I think the quality you get out of Chabot every night will improve immensely.

100% agree.

Overplaying a D is detrimental. This is exactly what the Leafs did to Phaneuf. He was a guy that could handle about 20 minutes a game, and look good doing it. Instead, he got craptastic D partners and was playing around 24 minutes. It didn't work as we know.

Clearly, Chabot is more talented, but there is a track record of how overplaying D can stunt career growth.

And when Chabot's best statistical season was with Hainsey.... it speaks more than volumes on how the Sens habe failed to tap his real potential. Finding his Marc Methot should be a priority!
