Something Has to Give

Created by: Millertime24
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 19, 2021
Published: Mar. 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team cannot compete with Blueger and Malkin out longer term (Still not sure what the extent of Malkin's injury is, but it's not looking good). McCann coming back will help some, but this team is severely lacking forward depth. McCann could center Tanev and Kapanen and create a decent 2nd line, or do they bump Tanev to the 3rd line and spread the talent? A trade needs to be made immediately. The top line is gonna burn out playing 20-23 minutes a game. What's the move(s)?

The Penguins severely lack trade capital. They should have just claimed Grigorenko and hoped for the best.

"but this team is severely lacking forward depth. "

I really hate to break it to you, this team was severely lacking forward depth before anyone got hurt.
Best thing this team can do at this point is nothing. They were not a real contender from the start. Just better than the bad teams in the division.
This is a division hell bent on killing each other just to be destroyed by the other division who don't do such dumb ass things.

I'm aware they have been lacking forward depth all season. Specifically, I think they have lacked a 3rd line all season. Tanev, Blueger, and Aston-Reese need to be the 4th line for this team to have any chance at a Stanley Cup run IMO. With that said, it has come to a point where they have to do something about it. They were able to be patient before because they were winning. I think this team, when healthy, is a contender. I also don't see them wasting Crosby's last few great seasons. He may not get points like he used to, but he's still a force. The time is now to build this team for a run this year, so who are they going after?

While I agree their trade capital is not the greatest, they still have some pieces they could move to help shore up forward group. Marino, POJ, Poulin, Legare, Pettersson, and a 2nd rounder this yr.

you can keep pissing in the wind and getting it all over yourself, or you can turn the other direction.
This team is too flawed this year. The best move is to hit reset at the end of the season. You got a lot of those 1 year deals kicking off the books, Bjugstad money opens up, Major pieces like Zucker will be back. You also have the possibility of maybe getting what prospect talent they have on the ice as they will be out of juniors.
They got 4 mil in cap next year. The only guys they have to resign are ZAR and Blueger, both RFAs neither one of which has a ton of leverage. They probably get both for 3mil combined.
They can move on Matheson by sending him to seattle. That will open up 4.8 million more in cap, and we can talk about actually doing something about the forward group in FA.

It's a flawed assumption that you have to do something. This is the mistake JR kept making. Just desperately throwing what ever **** he could out there. It led to last years cluster F of guys like PM who had no business on the team.
They are in as good of a position as they ever have been to hit reset. 8.8 million in cap if they move matheson, is a lot of space. Probably end up with almost 5.6 million in cap after ZAR Blueger resign, they can find 2 3rd line players. If they play Poulin it's 5 million to find a center. Pissing away assets now simply isn't the solution.

I disagree with all of this. Their flaws are minor when all are healthy. They need about 1-2 bottom six guys. If they are truly going into to rebuild right now, they should trade Guentzel, Rust, Marino, POJ, etc and acquire as many draft picks/prospects as possible. As long as Crosby is on this team, I'll keep pissing into the wind.

they don't have to rebuild, they need to retool. There is a huge difference.
And the flaws are not minor when they are healthy. Their power play is pure trash, it might be the worst I have ever seen, and it has been bad under sully before. They play like they are sleepwalking through games. They have trailed in almost every single game this year. If these are "minor flaw" than what is a major one?
You'd have to be blind to say this team is "fine." There are serious problems even when healthy. And to be clear it's not 1-2 bottom 6 guys they need. They got a whole lot of potential 4th line players.
It's the middle 6 players, the one's that are hard to find and you have to give something up to get, that this team is missing. Expecting them to come in and "save" the team isn't going to happen.
None of them are going to fix that awful powerplay and they aren't going to magically wake up the top 2 lines. Which if that doesn't get fixed, forget it. As teams will take liberties on them all though the playoffs. As their is no cost in doing so and will make sure the other team wins. We've seen WSH and NYI do this. We know BOS knows how to do it. This isn't a team built do deal with that. They only thing they can do it make them give up goals on every penalty so they refrain from it. But they can't score for ****.
This team needs a retool. It is what it is. Why waste assets so they can dip out 1st round again.

Nah. Sleepwalking? They were on a 6 game winning streak before Malkin got hurt. They have played hard and competed with absolute trash on lines 2-4. Top 2 lines are perfectly fine when healthy. Malkin and Kappy have found great chemistry and the Sid line is always dangerous. Malkin struggled to start the season. It's no coincidence when he started playing better, the team started winning more and the powerplay improved. The Blueger line has been very good as the 3rd line too, they're just best suited for the 4th line. They have McCann who is a good 3rd liner. They need a couple wingers or a center for the 3rd line that is a threat to score. Jarry has also found his form and looks like the all star he was last year. Their defense is also set, they could actually move a defenseman to add a 3rd liner. This team is very good when healthy, and could most certainly compete for the cup.
