<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>they don't have to rebuild, they need to retool. There is a huge difference.
And the flaws are not minor when they are healthy. Their power play is pure trash, it might be the worst I have ever seen, and it has been bad under sully before. They play like they are sleepwalking through games. They have trailed in almost every single game this year. If these are "minor flaw" than what is a major one?
You'd have to be blind to say this team is "fine." There are serious problems even when healthy. And to be clear it's not 1-2 bottom 6 guys they need. They got a whole lot of potential 4th line players.
It's the middle 6 players, the one's that are hard to find and you have to give something up to get, that this team is missing. Expecting them to come in and "save" the team isn't going to happen.
None of them are going to fix that awful powerplay and they aren't going to magically wake up the top 2 lines. Which if that doesn't get fixed, forget it. As teams will take liberties on them all though the playoffs. As their is no cost in doing so and will make sure the other team wins. We've seen WSH and NYI do this. We know BOS knows how to do it. This isn't a team built do deal with that. They only thing they can do it make them give up goals on every penalty so they refrain from it. But they can't score for ****.
This team needs a retool. It is what it is. Why waste assets so they can dip out 1st round again.</div></div>
Nah. Sleepwalking? They were on a 6 game winning streak before Malkin got hurt. They have played hard and competed with absolute trash on lines 2-4. Top 2 lines are perfectly fine when healthy. Malkin and Kappy have found great chemistry and the Sid line is always dangerous. Malkin struggled to start the season. It's no coincidence when he started playing better, the team started winning more and the powerplay improved. The Blueger line has been very good as the 3rd line too, they're just best suited for the 4th line. They have McCann who is a good 3rd liner. They need a couple wingers or a center for the 3rd line that is a threat to score. Jarry has also found his form and looks like the all star he was last year. Their defense is also set, they could actually move a defenseman to add a 3rd liner. This team is very good when healthy, and could most certainly compete for the cup.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>you can keep pissing in the wind and getting it all over yourself, or you can turn the other direction.
This team is too flawed this year. The best move is to hit reset at the end of the season. You got a lot of those 1 year deals kicking off the books, Bjugstad money opens up, Major pieces like Zucker will be back. You also have the possibility of maybe getting what prospect talent they have on the ice as they will be out of juniors.
They got 4 mil in cap next year. The only guys they have to resign are ZAR and Blueger, both RFAs neither one of which has a ton of leverage. They probably get both for 3mil combined.
They can move on Matheson by sending him to seattle. That will open up 4.8 million more in cap, and we can talk about actually doing something about the forward group in FA.
It's a flawed assumption that you have to do something. This is the mistake JR kept making. Just desperately throwing what ever **** he could out there. It led to last years cluster F of guys like PM who had no business on the team.
They are in as good of a position as they ever have been to hit reset. 8.8 million in cap if they move matheson, is a lot of space. Probably end up with almost 5.6 million in cap after ZAR Blueger resign, they can find 2 3rd line players. If they play Poulin it's 5 million to find a center. Pissing away assets now simply isn't the solution.</div></div>
I disagree with all of this. Their flaws are minor when all are healthy. They need about 1-2 bottom six guys. If they are truly going into to rebuild right now, they should trade Guentzel, Rust, Marino, POJ, etc and acquire as many draft picks/prospects as possible. As long as Crosby is on this team, I'll keep pissing into the wind.

While I agree their trade capital is not the greatest, they still have some pieces they could move to help shore up forward group. Marino, POJ, Poulin, Legare, Pettersson, and a 2nd rounder this yr.

I really hate to break it to you, this team was severely lacking forward depth before anyone got hurt.
Best thing this team can do at this point is nothing. They were not a real contender from the start. Just better than the bad teams in the division.
This is a division hell bent on killing each other just to be destroyed by the other division who don't do such dumb ass things.</div></div>
I'm aware they have been lacking forward depth all season. Specifically, I think they have lacked a 3rd line all season. Tanev, Blueger, and Aston-Reese need to be the 4th line for this team to have any chance at a Stanley Cup run IMO. With that said, it has come to a point where they have to do something about it. They were able to be patient before because they were winning. I think this team, when healthy, is a contender. I also don't see them wasting Crosby's last few great seasons. He may not get points like he used to, but he's still a force. The time is now to build this team for a run this year, so who are they going after?

Rakell and Simon
Probably not enough for Rakell. Would definitely claim Simon tho. I would keep the Tanev, Blueger, Kap line together. Simon, while nothing special, is a much better option on the 4th line than Lafferty or Jank. He can also fill in for very short periods of time on the top line when Sid is healthy if needed.

Because even though Matheson is having a good year, he isn’t having a good enough one to quantify Seattle taking him over McCann, Tanev, ZAR, etc. so if they were to trade MP this year, they would basically be forced to protect Matheson or Riikola who Seattle won’t take regardless. Pens could get better value for MP or even Dumo if they want to go the younger and cheaper route in the offseason after the expansion draft when teams wouldn’t have to worry about protecting them.</div></div>
I would be completely fine with not moving Pettersson. I just think if the Pens are going to go all in this year, they need top 6 help. If Zucker is gonna be back I wouldn't make a big trade. I'd go after Bobby Ryan to play on Sids wing. I really liked the Tanev, McCann, Kapanen line too, they need to keep that in tact. I would keep Guentzel and Rust with Malkin and play Zucker and Ryan with Sid if they can swing a trade for Ryan. Either way, I think they are at least 1 top 6 forward away from having 4 solid lines. Ideally they should want to find a better 4th liner than Jank or Lafferty too.

And I would be willing to bet that if anyone of those forwards are exposed, including blueger, they would take them leaving the pens McCann. Which would be an issue for the pens and terrible asset management. Just like you guys trading Ekholm and getting MP in return. It makes no sense. If the trade included maybe Zucker instead of MP. Then you get a top 6 forward that’s less than Forsberg but get a good top 9 prospect, a 1st in a deeper draft, and another prospect that could be a decent 4th liner. Since you’d hope they just keep Forsberg and protect him anyway. You’d just protect Zucker to replace Forsberg and get a decent haul added to it. Then I think the pens would think about pulling the trigger and it might make a little more sense for Nashville too. Or they could just flip Zucker too and get more picks/prospects.</div></div>
That seems fair. If they actually did get someone like Forsberg, Zucker would be the odd man out anyways. I still think Pettersson is being undervalued a bit by other teams. He's a young cost controlled Top 4 D-Man. The emergence of Joseph makes him expandable for the Pens if they want.

True. I think Kapanen is much better on the 3rd line. He's way too inconsistent for the 1st line IMO. That 3rd line last night looked tenacious. I would definitely try to keep it together. Kap looked good on the powerplay too. Wouldn't mind seeing him take Rusts spot on the top PP when everyone is healthy.

If Zucker is out for the rest of the season, I would go after someone like Forsberg. I posted a trade earlier of Forsberg for Pettersson, Poulin, Bjorkvist, Sceviour, and 2022 1st Round Pick.

Yea I wish Sully would have played Zucker with Sid more. Zucker is a very good complimentary player to Sids game. Who knows when he is gonna be back tho and I think this team is real close to being contenders. They're 1 player away with Zucker in the line-up and 2 players away with him being out.

I'm not sure we need to add a 3C. Tanev, McCann, Kapanen looked great. Obviously a small sample, but it looks very promising. McCann is also on a fairly good deal for a 3C who can play in the Top 6 when needed.
I think the team needs to focus on finding Top 6 wingers. Not sure Virtanen fits that role. Id rather go for someone like Bobby Ryan. Malkin looked like a completely different player with Guentzel and Rust as his line mates. They were also very successful last year when Sid was out. I think when Sid is back they should keep Guentzel, Malkin, Rust together. Gonna need to make a move for someone to play with Sid tho.

When you write it like that, sure it sounds like a good mix for Forsberg, but the mix that PIT actually has to offer just isn't quality enough.</div></div>
I guess it would come down to what management in NSH thinks of Poulin. I wrote it like that because that's what PIT is giving up in the trade. Like Pharrow said, Forsberg is a 1.5 year rental. I think it's a lot for PIT to give up, but if they win a Stanley Cup because of it then it's all worth it.

I would think if NSH trades Forsberg, they will probably trade Ekholm too? I think a Top 6 prospect, another prospect, a younger Top 4 D-Man and a 1st round pick is pretty close to what it would take to get Forsberg.

I think Zucker is a lot better than his stats show this year. He is definitely more of a third wheel player. He's not really going to drive play or make any fancy plays, but he works his tail off and plays hard. He should be an excellent complimentary piece to a star center's line, but Malkin has not played like a star this year. Pens need to shuffle their line and put Zucker on the top line to play with Sid. Either way, I'm not advocating the trade, I just think Zucker is better than what he's getting credit for.

I don't disagree, that line has been great, but if the Pens want to compete for the cup this year then that line needs to be the 4th line. Aston Reese, Blueger, and Tanev will be on the ice when the other teams top line is on the ice (especially when they play at home and have the last line change) so I don't think having a "new" third line would diminish their playing time too kuch. Their role is to limit/wear down the other teams best line, which they do very well, any time they score its just an added bonus. The Pens need a competent scoring 3rd line if they want to compete this year. They also need Letang and Malkin to wake up.
