Reimer

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
COL
  1. Reimer, James
Additional Details:
Carolina want to move a goalie to open up capspace for a forward. Avs need a backup and can take on cap due to Johnson and Francouz being on LTIR. Seems like a decent match.

Not sure if this price is fair, but if it's much higher than this Avs would probably target Bernier for a 3rd instead.

For only a 5th? Canes probably decline. Up the offer to either a 3rd, Jean-Luc Foudy, or Drew Helleson and perhaps we consider. Considering our lack of right-handed defensemen in our pool, Helleson may be my choice if Foudy is too high a price.

A Carolina fan in a Carolina AGM propopsed Johansson + 2022 6th for Reimer, so a 5th seems pretty fair.

Helleson or Foudy for a backup who's somewhat of a capdump is a massive overpayment and will never happen. For a 3rd Avs would aim higher with Bernier who Detroit fand value at precisely a 3rd.

Personally, I think Bernier for a 3rd is an underpayment in the current 3 goalie per team situation. He can fetch at least a 2nd. The issue is that Reimer wouldn't be dealt as a cap dump. He's performed too well to be a cap dump. Quality 3rd goalies have value, especially since Petr is still uncertain. Canes likely only deal one of the three goalies for value unless there's a really good but expensive player available at the deadline (say, Eichel).

Bernier could possibly get a late 2nd if the goalie market is dry AND if Detroit retain half, but the idea that he is worth "at least a 2nd" seems off base.

Canes need to find a contender who need a backup AND who can take on Reimers full cap hit without sending money back. How many playoff teams do you think need a backup who can also take on his full cap hit? Colorado are clearly the best fit, and asking for too much could see Carolina get stuck with Reimer instead of being able to use that capspace on a forward.

The best fit, IMO, is actually Philly. Their goaltending is a complete tire fire and (IMO) the main factor causing their unexpectedly bad start to the year. And Carolina can retain 50%. They've been conserving a lot of cap space since Dzingel/Paquette.

Interesting suggestion with Philadelphia. We'll see in two weeks if they will be buyers. If they fall away further they will probably be sellers rather than buyers.

In a normal season it would make sense to trade him out of conference too, but I suppose Carolina has as much chance as meeting Philadelphia in the semifinal as they do Philadelphia so its a moot point.

This is a team that made three straight trades last season with the Rangers, inside their own division, during a crucial stretch of play when they were nipping at our heels in the Metro. That FO is not afraid to deal players within the conference or the division if the return is good.

Goalies are a usually a different matter. For instance, Washington traded Grubauer to Colorado even though they had a better offer from Carolina (their 2nd rounder was higher than Colorado's). But again, Philadelphia have the same chance of meeting Carolina in the playoffs as Colorado, given how the semifinal will be reseeded rather than being conference based.

Can't see Carolina trading Reimer, or any goalie for futures as they might need all three in a long playoff drive.

If the draft return is good and there's a 3rd goalie going back the other way, Carolina may consider it. But if it's just for a measly 5th round pick from Colorado...no.

Wouldn't the whole premise of a Reimer trade be to get capspace for other trades?

Honestly, no, unless the FO's goal is get enough cap space to swallow a contract as large as Taylor Hall's outright and still have room for a RHD rental. They've opened up a ton of cap space just from the Dzingel/Paquette trade and taxi squad gymnastics.

Unless their goal is to cover all performance bonuses then we don’t have as much. Not as much for Hall outright and a RHD rental
