Summer '17

Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 2, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The trade deadline was absent of the big name deal New York was used to. Instead a smaller trade was made. A somewhat lateral move to trade Kevin Klein and Brandon Pirri - who had not made the impact most were expecting, for Cody Franson and a 3rd round pick in 2017. Franson was a pending UFA which gave them flexibility before the Expansion Draft, and cut a bit of salary before the UFA season.

The buyout of Girardi and the fact that Franson was now a UFA let the Rangers protect Nick Holden who had just come off a career high season. Unfortunately however the Golden Knights instead took Michael Grabner.

Most re-signings were small 1-2 year term deals. Fast and Lindberg both saw modest raises, while Hrivik, Jensen, and Puempel were re-signed to small deals and would soon face off in the 2017 training camp for the remaining spot in the lineup. Most think Puempel will come out on top. Clendening also saw a 1 year deal in order to round out the D-corps for the summer's bigger signings..

Those bigger signings came in the form of the 5.35 mil AAV signing for Mika Zibanejad, and the giant 6 year, 6.25 AAV signing of Kevin Shattenkirk, taking a modest pay cut in order to fit the Rangers budget.

I don't see Vegas taking Grabner. Yes he's having a good year on a great team, however, Vegas is not going to be a great team they are going to struggle offensively and Grabner is not going to get protected minutes like he is now. And being a Leafs fan I can confirm he's struggles when he's being relied upon to do some heavy lifting in the offence. He's also old and on the decline. Because of this I see Vegas taking either Puempel or Rannta.

So I kind of agree. I got the picks down to 1 of Grabner/Fast/Puempel/Lindberg/Clendening. Raanta wasn't as much a possibility because of my explanation below. I think I failed to be impartial a little bit because I think losing Fast would seriously hurt the Rangers, but I do think Grabner's PK ability, and his ability to have exciting breakaways every game kind of mesh with Vegas' goal of being exciting and competitive from day 1. The other picks (especially Puempel) I think are more of a building block pick, which Bill Foley already said wasn't the goal. They want to push for the playoffs from the beginning and I think of those potential picks Grabner is the best fit for that.

The only reason I don't think they take Raanta is because there are so many solid goalies available. One of Bishop/Fleury/Reimer/Luongo/Halak/Neuvirth etc will be possibilities, and while I think Raanta is the clear pick in a vacuum, the availability of some other names will make a Grabner or Fast more likely.

Rineu1: You mentioned a lot of goalies in you reply to Pilu916. Once difference, Raanta just makes 1m. That's appealing.
