Rangers - How the offseason should go

Created by: SevenLeg
Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 25, 2021
Published: Apr. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Strome's emergence have made a top center unnecessary for this year. The UFA center market looks much better in 2022-23 with Barkov, Hertl, Domi, Trocheck, Kadri, Couturier. I'd wait one more year instead of bringing in RNH.

Trades
1.
NYR
  1. Friedman, Mark
  2. 2022 5th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Trade for a decent bottom pairing RD to use the last defenseman protection spot on and use him as a stopgap while Lundkvist acclimatizes himself in the AHL.
PIT
  1. Howden, Brett
Additional Details:
The Penguins get a bottom 6 center with untapped offensive potential.
2.
NYR
The Blackwell/Gauthier dilemma is perplexing, but I feel like the 23 year-old fits the Rangers timeline more than the 28 year-old. Blackwell is a nice story but I'd be cautious about his 21.4% shooting percentage and his 5.7 goals above expected.

It would be egregious to lose him since it could be another 16-17 Jonathan Marchessault story but he could also be another 19-20 Noel Acciari

I could be completely mistaken, and the Rangers protect him in lieu of Gauthier which is also understandable.
    SEA
    1. Blackwell, Colin
    Additional Details:
    Protection List :
Buchnevich, Chytil, Gauthier, Kreider, Panarin, Strome, Zibanejad
    Friedman, Lindgren, Trouba
    Georgiev

    Exposed :
Bitetto, Blackwell, Brodzinski, Hájek, Kinkaid, Rooney

    1. Hickey, Thomas
    2. Hutton, Grant
    3. 2023 4th round pick (NYI)
    NYI
Exploit the remaining cap space by acquiring a one-year cap dump. Not necessarily Hickey.

I don't think a waiver claim from a few weeks ago holds much more value. The 5th round pick is for the difference in age/potential.

The Keider and Trouba Contracts will be huge problems for this team in the very near future.

If they're still good players it won't be THAT hard

Could be, but we are also neglecting the amount of cap space that will be freed by the buyouts at the end of 2022-23. Those 4 millions will be helpful if the cap stay flat. If they are lucky they could bridge Lafrenière on a three-year deal depending on his progression to make it expire at the same time as Trouba's contract.

There's literally no point to rush Lundkvist. Give him 10 games or so in the AHL and after that Friedman becomes a solid #7 under league minimum.

Smith has already been that and hes proven to be great in the locker room, also lundkvist is proven and ready, barring rust from a short camp/no preseason he'll be a day regular

Both are overpaid right now. As they age it's not going to get better or easier to trade them. Especially since the team will need to shed salary for the likes of Laff, Fox and Kappo.

They just have a lot of really good young players coming up that will need to get paid and having depth guys making 6 and 8 million into their 30's is going to make it really hard to find value.

I don't think you fully understand the thinking process. Smith would have to be brought back at likely 1.5m$ or so, while Friedman is a useful player to use your last protection spot on instead of Hajek. You're literally nitpicking over a more than fair #4C - #6D swap

that was my thinking about miller and he was underwhelming in his last year as wisconsin, nils has torn up the shl so I'd be surprised if he's not in for opening night assuming he doesnt choke in camp

I still think that a decent insurance #6-7 dman could end up being useful. If Lundkvist turns out well, good for the Rangers, but they still swapped Howden for a young NHL caliber defenseman.
