Trading for the signing rights to RNH or Krejci

Created by: AFox23
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2021

Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Trades
NYR
  1. Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan
Additional Details:
Kind of like the Kevin Hayes to Philadelphia deal. Rangers would acquire RNH after the playoffs but before his contract is up. Then it would be up to us to convince him to stay for 7-8 years.
EDM
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (NYR)
NYR
  1. Krejci, David
Additional Details:
Same idea. Acquiring signing rights after playoffs before free agency.
BOS
  1. 2021 3rd round pick (NYR)
Buyouts
  • Kevin Shattenkirk: $6,083,333
  • Henrik Lundqvist: $5,500,000
  • Dan Girardi: $1,111,111
  • Ryan Spooner: $300,000
  • Brad Richards: $0

A 2nd round pick for a player's rights?

Krejci isn't gonna leave Boston to go to the Rangers either.

I actually think trading for players rights should be worth about a 2nd or 3rd. If you are able to get a deal done, you're basically trading for them when they have x amount of years left on their contract. Would RNH with 5 years on his contract be worth a 2nd? Absolutely

You're not trading for RNH with 5 years on his contract. You're trading a 2nd for a small window to negotiate with RNH. He can still sign with another team if he wants to.

If a team is confident that the player will sign with them, just wait till free agency so you don't have to waste a pick. A 2nd is still valuable. A 4th/5th is the absolute most you should trade for a UFA's rights.

I said IF you can sign him. You wouldn't trade for his rights if you weren't 100% sure you could sign him.

You are essentially giving up picks for free, its not worth it to trade for UFA rights

If you were 100% sure you could sign him, you wouldn't waste an asset trading for his rights. You'd just wait till FA to sign him without giving up a pick.

Unless it's McDvd MacK Barkov Austin Sid, it's not worth tapping out cap long term. RNH for 7 years @ 7m ish is suicide. Paying for talking rights is for non favourable markets, not us.
