Toronto says Hard no. Even with that retention, nobody wants that contract till the age of 40. Nylander is better Lebanc so not sure why we are paying extra to take on Burns awful contract.

Burns is still a very good player who ate up over 27 minutes a game on AVERAGE this season. He's not slowing down at all. The gripe with him is his 8mil cap hit, not his age. And that's taken care of here.

Even pretending like burns don't slow down till 40 this is not a good trade for Toronto. They are downgrading on Nylander to take a bad contract, he is not worth 8 million AAV right now, mind as well in 4 years

For sure agreed about the 8mil, but that's why he'd be at 4mil AAV with TOR with this trade proposal, which makes him (IMO) a very good asset and kind of what TOR needs. All series the dmen had trouble keeping pucks in on the blueline, which Burns does really well, and getting shots through from the point.

Having said that I think in principle TOR should keep Nylander and trade Marner for 2 guys who'll take up the same ~11mil AAV cap hit.

Forgot about the retention on my second comment, my bad. If we are going to trade Nylander (IMO Nylander shouldnt be traded), I would rather it for a younger defensemen.

If SJ's not retaining 4mil on Burns, definitely agreed.

In this scenario though it'll be rough to have 6mil in dead money and cap hit with Hertl and Ferraro's extensions looming and still wanting to signs guys and sport a competitive team (with contracts like EK65's, Couture's, Meier's, etc., SJ doesn't have a choice but to try and stay competitive).
