Carey Price is the first 10mm plus player in NHL history to reach the 2nd round

Created by: Wreckless
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2021
Published: Jun. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not first goalie. First player. In the salary cap era. Ever.

McDavid, Panarin, Matthews, Karlsson, Tavares, Doughty, Marner, Toews, Kane, Kopitar, Bobrovsky.

None of them have EVER reached the second round after signing their $10mm + contracts.

Price is the only one of the 12.

Wow. That’s a pretty nuts statistic when you really get down to thinking about it.

Does Romanov play game 1? Ducharme has clearly earned our trust. Will be interesting to see what he decides.

If Lehkonen is back healthy and draws in, who do you think Ducharme is going to sit?

that's a tad misleading given cap inflation etc.

have teams ever made the second round with players making at least 14% of the total team salary cap? I believe the answer is yes, many many times.

yet I'll grant you that the leafs are pushing it with having so many guys making a lot and clearly it's not working

You can think it’s misleading all you want, but it’s just straight facts. The final 8 teams in the NHL playoffs have never had a $10mm player in it, in the salary cap era (since 2005), until today.

My point in posting this is I found that to be quite surprising, and it undoubtedly provides pretty interesting food for thought. You can probably win quite a few bets at the bar with that little nugget. Most people probably won’t believe you. You’re welcome!

(That post had nothing to do with the Leafs specifically, by the way, it was specific to Price, another first for someone who couldn’t possibly be more deserving of his contract. And excellent player and human being).

I'm a lot more surprised Toews/Kane were given those contracts after the Cup runs... I always thought it was during them

But yeah, due to cap raises and what not, you're best to go by cap hit percentage, in which Ovi actually has the highest in the league and has won the Cup, of course

It is still quite an interesting fact nonetheless

True fact but also consider every single team in the past 5 years to win a cup besides St Louis has had at least 1 player with a cap hit of 9 million or more per season. And this year, 4 of the remaining 8 teams have one or more 9 mill+ Cap hits in their roster.

You can still be a good team with high cap hit players

well bc it's true. pittsburgh won like 3 cups with crosby malkin making like 14-15% of the cap each

if guys make that much money they have to be god-mode, which thankfully for pittsburgh and montreal, they have been

amazing what a team can do with ELC players, particularly the best ELC player in a decade. 2nd round feels amazing innit?

Agreed, with huge cap hit comes god-mode responsibility. And if you’re not proven to be good-mode in the playoffs, it’s probably prudent for GMs to think twice before offering that type of deal.

McDavid, Panarin, Matthews, Doughty, and Kane are all clearly worth their contracts. Not sure about the rest.

No one « always » does. But Price does it more consistently than anyone else among his generation, especially when the games matter most. Ken Holland has some pretty powerful words for Price in the Toronto Sun today. Not often that you get that level of honesty from a rival GM.

If my math is right, these 12 players have combined 1 series win and 14 series losses in the first round since signing their $10mm plus contracts, and Karlsson and Panarin haven’t even made the playoffs once since. And I’m not even counting the losses in the 5 game play-in series for Tavares, Matthews, Marner, McDavid, Panarin, and Bobrovsky (of note, Toews and Kane won theirs).

Fascinating.
