Description
Tarik El Bashier in his new mailbag for The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/2622429/2021/05/31/capitals-internal-defensive-options-expansion-draft-decisions-connor-mcmichael-projection-mailbag-part-2/) said "as I’ve mentioned, I expect MacLellan to be aggressive in the trade and free-agent markets as he looks to retool the roster on the fly." But in another mailbag (https://theathletic.com/2621530/2021/05/30/capitals-cup-contention-window-ideal-term-for-alex-ovechkin-evgeny-kuznetsovs-value-mailbag-part-1/) he said "The short answer is, no, the Caps are not planning a tear-it-down-and-start-from-scratch rebuild this offseason. As MacLellan explained, when the team committed to Backstrom, who inked a five-year extension last year, and Ovechkin, who is expected to re-sign in the near future, the decision was made to continue to spend to the cap by augmenting the team’s core in an attempt to remain competitive for as long as possible."

To me, this signals that GMBM won't trade the main core (except Kuzy) but everyone around the core is fair game.

Trades: Dillon plus draft pick ensures he's picked in the expansion draft
Hags to NYI cause NYI needs 4th line help
Kuzy + 3rd for Hertl gets you back a good player that can fill the whole of Kuzy right away. If you make this deal, you probably extend Hertl for like 6 years $34 Mill
CBJ needs C help so Eller for 2 3rds
Same with NJD, they need Defensive help so 2 years of Jensen at $2.5 Mill gets the Caps a 3rd
Tyson Jost is interesting since he has lost trade value and Colorado doesn't seem to be in love with him. Analytics seems to like him so I would be willing to give a package around a couple of picks.

Free Agency:
Brock McGinn immediately replaces Hagelin with a younger player.
Ovi comes back 99.5%, 4 years is so that he and Backstrom can retire together
Samsonov is your future #1 so you lock him up for the next 3 years.
Petr Mrazek is a good backup goalie if Samsonov ever gets injured. Also, good competition to have with VV, Sammy, and Mrazek.
Paul Ladue is depth

I'd kill for Hertl. Would love for that to happen.

No way Caps trade away Eller unless they absolutely have to. Kempny isn't coming back from that injury and being 2nd pair, think his top 4 days are over. And Fehervary will definitely be on the team.

For sure, Hertl would fit nicely on the team. I don't know about that, the GM keeps talking about being aggressive and you can't be aggressive without giving something up and I think the player you gotta give up is Eller. I'm not sure but if that is the case, Kempny and Alexeyev could switch. Fehervary was an interesting one but the article I linked wasn't too bullish about him on the team this year. I think in 2022 when Schultz and Kempny's contracts come off the books, that's when you'll see Fehervary.

We've already seen Fehervary way more than Alex. He's above Alex currently in the depth chart. Nothing has happened that would change that.

I think BMac already said Fehervary will be a starter next season. He loves that dude.

Sharks say no obviously. Kuz has a good amount of problems and isnt as good as Hertl. Only way Hertl moves is a rebuild and if we rebuild Kuznetsov is not the return we want

Sure but Hertl is a FA after this year so move him for something before FA. If Kuzy turns out to be good then either A. You can flip him for picks especially since he's under contract for 4 more years B. Build around him and Kane.

I don't see the Caps replacing Hagelin with another winger over $2mil. If/when he is moved, they'll get another value player or cycle through some prospects. Same thing with Kempny/Jensen - they'd move Kempny, the rusty LD, before they move Jensen, the capable RD. Overall strategy, though, I think you've got nailed. Count me in the camp with you that thinks Eller is not as safe as some believe.

But who plays in 3C then? We get worse with almost any other C as our 3C. Eller is worthy as a 2C on a lot of teams. He's kind of a 2.5C. In 2019-2020 he was our best C for long stretches.

I agree to an extent but for me the Hagelin move wasn't about money as much as its about age. I don't want to have a 32 year old 4th liner on the team when the team is already one of the oldest in the league. Also I think the Caps 4th line is an advantage so I wouldn't move any of those guys unless I got back in return equal player/an upgrade and in my eyes going from Hags to McGinn is an upgrade while going from Hags to cheap player/prospect is a downgrade (unless the prospect is like a B/B+ prospect but you wouldn't play those guys on your 4th line).

My thing about Kempny/Jensen is that you can get a pick back for Jensen while you would have to attach a pick to Kempny. So because of that, I would rather have a pick and Kempny rather than Jensen and 1 less pick. Also if Kempny struggles you can easily replace him with Alexeyev.

Thank you I appreciate that, yeah for sure I don't think a 32 year old 3C is safe when the GM is talking about being aggressive.
