There is no incentive for Winnipeg to make that trade.

There certainly is. They will just lose him for nothing to SEA. This alternative gives them a high second, which is enough to flip and replace him and the nothing guy SEA takes...

Honestly, I feel he is good enough to recoup more but AGMs on this site have constantly talked his value down so I think I value him higher than most.

Schmidt is going to bounce back next season, I think the team holds onto him.

I like your thinking but if I were a betting man, I'd bet he is gone. Honestly he is 30 and very useful. He should be on a team that is competing. He is exactly the kind of player you win with and VAN is too far away from using him the way he is supposed to be.

Once Edler retires they will still need a top 4 dman to eat his minutes. Benning will have to replace that through free agency or trade regardless.

The Jets have to lose someone to Seattle. Trading Appleton beforehand for a pick that doesn't help now, means the Jets lose a better player than Appleton on the ED, plus they've traded Appleton for nothing. So, in effect the Jets lose two players to the ED. The Jets are better off letting Seattle take Appleton, so no incentive for Winnipeg.

If it were both of them then maybe.

There's are still a few complications though.

Detroit already have 9 waiver eligible wingers penned in for next year so Lind would have to beat out at least one of them that then might be lost for nothing on waivers, If Lind had been exempt next year it would have looked much better.

Joulevi isn't really the type of defender Detroit needs right now, They have 4 newly signed good looking LD prospects and 2 more still unsigned. What detroit needs on LD is one or two veterans to tie tem over for a year or two until the youngsters mature and those will be found in FA.

Your best bet might be to just offer a 2nd + a 5th or something to take Roussel of your hands

How would the Jets lose a better player than Appleton to SEA if Appleton is traded? The whole point is that Appleton is the best unprotected player on the Jets. If he is traded for a 2nd round pick (for example). Then who does SEA select? Harkins? Beaulieu? Little? Essentially SEA is left with slim pickings... Then WPG has a second round pick that they can trade for a replacement for Appleton.
