Productive Offseason (Follow Up to "Productive Trade Deadline)

Created by: austinjackson
Team: 2017-18 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the Offseason to follow up the "Productive Trade Deadline" post I made earlier (https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/253202)

With most big deals already done at the deadline, no trades happen over the offseason (as much as we'd like to move some of our contracts out, no one would be willing to take them on. We simply give up hope on Ericsson, bury him in the minors rather than buyout since we still have the cap space for this season. Kronwall is very close to the end and if his knees are as bad as they seem, I'm assuming he's headed for a lifetime on the LTIR.

Big changes on the back end (moving on from Ericsson and Kronwall), and ushering in the new core of Liljegren (Top D man in the draft), Shattenkirk, Brodie and Dekeyser providing some nice balance along with the young upside 3rd pairing of Montour and Russo.

Up Front, we are simply giving the youngsters more defined roles in the top 6 and the additional ice time they need to take their next steps.

EXPANSION DRAFT PROTECTION LIST (Using the 7-3-1 Strategy):
F: Larkin (exempt), Mantha, Nyquist, Zetterberg, Nielsen, Athanasiou, Abdelkader, Glendening
D: Brodie, Dekeyser, Ouellet
G: Mrazek
NOTES: Not many great choices for Las Vegas to pick from. Likely comes down to Sproul or Helm. Sproul is younger and not on a bad contract so I'm assuming they select him.

Why're you protecting Larkin here? You do realize that he's expansion exempt.

Once again you're under valuing the Green deal here, Holland retains $2 million on Green, So Edmonton gets Green @ $4 million for 1 year+Jurco+Detroit's 2017 3rd round pick and all Detroit gets back is a 1st round pick. Green by himself with retention will net us a 1st+D prospect and Jurco gets us a 3rd or 4th easily.

I forgot Larkin was exempt, they'd likely protect either Helm or Glendening then. It really doesn't change anything here.

The Red Wings are 4th-worst in the league, which would mean a #5 pick at best when you include Las Vegas (and assuming the Red Wings don't win the lottery to move up). That pick could sink to as low as #8 if teams behind the Red Wings win the lottery. I'm not sold on Liljegren falling that far in the draft. The Coyotes *really* need top-end defensive prospects. If the Avalanche don't get Nolan Patrick, they could also go for Liljegren, as they also frankly don't have very many good defensive prospects.

I am basing this off many Mock Draft's I've seen. Liljegren is not the clear cut #2 pick as this years draft is all over the place after Patrick at #1. The way the Wings are going I expect them to finish in the bottom 3-5 spots (ahead of only COL and ARZ). Of course there is no guarantee they get Liljegren, but you could say that for anyone at this stage lol (that goes without saying since the draft hasn't even happened yet). All I'm saying here is if he is on the board and the Wings aren't picking number 1, they should take him.

I feel like everyone on here is overvaluing montour. He's a good prospect but not as highly rated as he is being made out to be. I could see Anaheim asking for mantha if they were talking theodore.
