He’ll be 29 when the season starts...no reason to think he wont remain effective by his age 35 season, Dmen always outlast forwards and thats what it will take to sign him.
By the last year of his deal $11.5M will be like the equivelant of $6M is this year as contracts keep going up.

1. It would be legitimate - He has had chronic back issues for years.
2. That is the loophole - They won't be the only team doing this, it happen every year and for longer periods of time (Pronger, Franzen, Horton, Clarkson). Hell Pronger was even getting paid as an executive of another NHL organization while still being on a roster (on the LTIR)

The only issue is Nyquist has a NTC AND he is Swedish... so he is protected in Detroit. Im more concerned that Nyquist will get a "Holland" extension coming soon for a nice 6 year $5M per deal... What you have here is a common sense and fan move... Will Holland pull it off? Hell no! LOL We can all dream though. Same goes for getting rid of Ericsson contract.. At $2.5M he would be a great Dman.. but he isnt worth $4.25M and his crappy contract is why Dekeyser is getting $5M.</div></div>
Lots of good points here. And most of us have certainly lost faith in Holland. I doubt he will do much to change that. But please, and maybe most importantly, never use Ericsson and "Great Dman" at the same time lol. No matter the price, he is simply nothing more than a mediocre 6th or 7th Dman who should get a 1 or 2 year deal at $1M max, preferably not with the Wings

Close to home, without having to live under the microscope in Toronto. US taxes are much less as well. Yes the Wings are in the midst of a rebuild, but he's signing a long term deal with a team that has a nice prospect pool along with a crazy amount of quality draft picks to continue to improve over the next 3 years.
A top 6 that includes JT, Larkin, Mantha, Rasmussen and Bertuzzi plus whoever else winds up locking up the other top 6 spot long term, looks pretty solid going forward.

The problem with that concept is that they need the lineup spots in order to give some young guys opportunities. If they eat a contract it would have to be someone who is completely done that just be sent to the minors or onto the LTIR (Like a David Clarkson type). Orpik would expect playing time and that means Hicketts or one of the young guys would be left out.

Realistic Deadline - Step 1 in the REBUILD
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wdhowell</b></div><div>I like this although I have some concerns with being overpaid in each trade. I'd really like to see them trade off Helm too. Trade him as a $2M/yr third-line center and free up the roster spot to have Larkin, Rasmussen, Nielsen, and Turgeon/Glendening down the middle next season after moving Z to the wing.</div></div>
I would love to move Helm, but the reality is it would need to be done in the summer based on the above deals. A team can only retain salary on 2 players, so until Green is off the books, you wouldn't be able to retain salary for Helm. I think retaining 50% of the salary for Green is what allows you to net a late 1st round pick, which is more important than unloading Helm. A deal like that for Helm could be done in the summer.

Why would they not re-sign a 26 year old defenseman that they traded for, played on their top pairing and (hopefully) played well there? The Red Wings do not need a complete demolition and rebuild of the roster.
Fowler has choice of 31 teams to choose from as a UFA. Although Detroit would have a better change than other teams, it's very presumptive to assume, he would resign just because the Wings traded for him.</div></div>
Pretty sure they only make the deal if Fowler agrees to an extension.</div></div>

It was meant to be realistic. Given that Green isn't a rental, a 1st should be included and with the Wings sending back the 3rd and retaining some salary, it makes a lot of sense from the Oilers side.

Productive Offseason (Follow Up to "Productive Trade Deadline)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DragonRaptorHybrid</b></div><div><i>The Red Wings are 4th-worst in the league, which would mean a #5 pick at best when you include Las Vegas (and assuming the Red Wings don't win the lottery to move up). That pick could sink to as low as #8 if teams behind the Red Wings win the lottery. I'm not sold on Liljegren falling that far in the draft. The Coyotes *really* need top-end defensive prospects. If the Avalanche don't get Nolan Patrick, they could also go for Liljegren, as they also frankly don't have very many good defensive prospects.</i></div></div>
I am basing this off many Mock Draft's I've seen. Liljegren is not the clear cut #2 pick as this years draft is all over the place after Patrick at #1. The way the Wings are going I expect them to finish in the bottom 3-5 spots (ahead of only COL and ARZ). Of course there is no guarantee they get Liljegren, but you could say that for anyone at this stage lol (that goes without saying since the draft hasn't even happened yet). All I'm saying here is if he is on the board and the Wings aren't picking number 1, they should take him.

Don't think that'll do it for Calgary. A top 2 d for a goalie who has health issues, a number 4 d who I love, and a guy who hasn't scored a goal yet.</i></div></div>
The breakdown of the CGY Deal is essentially this:
CGY Gets Howard, Marchenko and a reliable bottom 6 forward (having a down year) in exchange for Brodie and a salary dump. Brodie is someone they can spare since they have depth on D with Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, Engelland and the up and coming Jokipakka. There is no denying that DET comes out with the best player in the deal, but Howard and Marchenko are still very good assets and lots of teams would love to get their hands on Sheahan as a quality bottom 6 forward.

I think you guys are overvaluing a prospect here. Getting a D prospect from ANH in exchange for Vanek is a very real possibility. Montour was a late 2nd Round pick. You are all saying we can get a 2nd and 3rd or a 2nd and 4th, but for some reason Montour is out of the question? Montour is not even ANH's top D prospect. Shea Theodore is their #1 D Prospect and you could argue that Jacob Larsson (Their 1st round pick from 2015) is also ahead of Montour in terms of long-term value to ANH. Trades don't always have to be Active NHLer for Draft Picks. Teams do move prospects when they don't have room for them on their active rosters. You guys need to open your minds a bit here.
Also, I think you're dreaming if you think we get more than a 1st in that Mike Green trade. Maybe they could get away with not including the 3rd back to EDM, but if they proposed this offer to Kenny, I would be upset if he declined it. It is not easy to pry teams 1st round picks from them, especially when they don't have a 2nd rounder for that year, which EDM already doesn't have.

EDM would be in great shape for the expansion. They don't have to protect McDavid or Nurse, so they would likely go the 8 skaters and 1 goalie route rather than the 7 forwards, 3 defense and 1 goalie option.
Projection of Protected Players. 4 Forwards - Eberle, Draisaitl, Lucic and Nugent-Hopkins, 4 D - Kelfbom, Sekera, Green and Larsson and the G is obviously Talbot
The best players they would leave exposed are Pouliot, Maroon, Kassian, Letestu and Pitlick. Not a big deal if they loose one of them.

I think you guys are wrong here, he is actually having a major rebound. He's a clear missing piece on the EDM blueline. Regardless, the Wings would likely be willing to hold onto maybe $2,000,000 as they will have the cap space if they're going for a true rebuild.
