No Hamilton or Jones

Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2021
Published: Jun. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- I’d be more than okay adding for Reinhart if a deal is in place before the trade, but that is where I would start the conversation. Boqvist showed promise toward the end of the season and NJD already has a log jam of guys who can play wing or center. Tyce is a sweetener with a good story in place to play with his brother, and the 1st helps Buffalo’s rebuild.

- No need for Butcher with Ty Smith in the lineup.

- Oleksiak provides size and a stay at home mentality (which NJD desperately needs) to support Walsh’s offensive game in sheltered minutes, or play along Subban who thrived in MTL playing with another defensive defenseman in Markov.

- Halak comes in to be the veteran backup Crawford was suppose to be this past season.

- With the flat cap, NJD still has $23m with PK coming off the books next season giving them plenty of flexibility to sign Hughes, resign Bratt/Zacha/Wood, and make a bigger splash in the off-season next year when they are ready to compete.

- Shelter Holtz on the 3rd line to get acclimated to North American ice/NHL tempo and let him naturally move up the lineup like Hischier did in his rookie year.

Open to opinions and suggestions, just don’t torch it… or do, go with what you feel.

I am not bullish on Oleksiak. There will probably be better options on trade market.
Reinhart would be great if it were for more than one season. But for one year, Devils shouldn't give up much for rentals.

Connor Carrick was really bad in first half. After, he returned form AHL, he got a little better, but is still an 8th or 9th d-man.

I think NJ needs to find a top 4 defenseman that is responsible defensively if they are going to take a step. I would do that Reinhart trade but I don't know if Buffalo would, it depends on how highly they view Boqvist. My only other thing is I would do whatever I can to keep Zacha on the wing so my forwards would probably look like:

Zacha-Hischier-Bratt
Sharangovich-Hughes-Reinhart
Foote-Kuokkanen-Holtz
Wood-McLeod-Bastian

Reinhart is an RFA and if NJD can grab him, they can afford him for a longer term deal. I still see Carrick as a serviceable depth piece, but I agree that he definitely had his questionable moments last year.

I can see arguments against Oleksiak, but with a rebuilding team, I wouldn’t want to see NJD give up too much in the trade market. I feel like Big Rig is a low risk signing and you know what you’re getting.

That’s fair. I agree Zacha is much better on the wing, I was just trying to keep the Kuokkanen - Hughes - Sharangovich line together. And I guess I’m pretty high on Bahl hoping he is an NHL regular next season who can handle top 4 minutes.

I'd hope for another Ryan Murray type deal for d-man
And Reinhart can sign a QO and get straight to UFA.

I can see where you're coming from with keeping that line together but I would rather get some consistency on Hischier's line with Zacha/Bratt (after the season he dealt with) and then give Jack the shiny new toy. It is also a lot to ask of Bahl to play a full season as a top 4 dman in the NHL. Walsh probably isn't ready to handle a full season in the NHL either but if NJ can grab someone like Martinez and Larsson to fill the top 4 then I could see the team taking a step towards being competitive.
