Trading Guentzel to Set Up A Rebuild Offseason

Created by: Arom5477
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 21, 2021
Published: Jun. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With this roster, we're still set up for a long run in the playoffs with a deep roster; However, with a lot of the contracts being up after the season allows us to take a hard look after the season with $54MM in cap space to decide: Do we keep going? Or, do we shut it down and rebuild? Also, if for some reason the team doesn't pan out, there are a lot of players on this roster that could garner high draft picks come trade deadline time.

  3. 2022 2nd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Conditional 2022 2nd round pick becomes a 2022 1st round pick if Guentzel scores 40+ goals -or- NSH makes it to the Western Conference Finals.

Similar to the Hornqvist trade at the start of GMJR's tenure: Traded the superior point-getter in James Neal, but got a new identity player in Hornqvist.

Same thing here: Trading the elite point getter, but small, Guentzel for a bigger, grittier Forsberg. Fabbro and the pick even up the deal due to Forsberg being UFA and Guentzel being young and having term.

Also, this sets up a lot freed cap space after the season to make the dreaded rebuild decision.

Love how all you Pens fans are ready to jump off the Jarry bandwagon soooo quickly... He struggled at the beginning of the season and in playoffs but the in between he was sorting it out, and you're all quick to forget how good he was last season pre-pandemic... Kid is still young on a team friendly deal and will be coming back with a purpose next season, while coming into his prime years.. Settle down Pens fans, you're gonna be fine, tweaks here and there and the team still has a window to winning(a lot longer than Washington's that's for sure!!!)...

Just to provide some context, at least from some of us Pens fans, we don't all think Jarry is bad. From my viewpoint while he's not young, he's still early in his NHL development and shows all the ability to be a true #1. This was his first season as a starter, so growing pains are expected. The issue is timing. The Sid/Geno window is closing fast and some would argue it's already closed, so we don't necessarily have time to wait out Jarry's development and need a proven starter now.

In all honesty, we just miss Fleury. He's the ex-girlfriend we want back but is already dating someone else.

Very incorrect assessment on Jake being an accessory type player. Jake is a top ten winger in this league.

Top 10?

Top 10?

He's been a point per game player across his last three seasons. How many wingers in the NHL do that?

I'm not saying he's not good. He's a very good player. I got to see plenty of him in the SCF in 2017 lol. I'm just saying that I think it might be too soon to call him a top 10 winger when there are guys like Kucherov, Marchand, Pastrnak, Panarin, Kane, Stone, Rantanen, Marner, Huberdeau, Ovechkin, etc. Again, he's a great player, but I don't think you're getting a young top 4 defenseman, a top 6 forward, a team's top forward prospect, and a 1st round pick for him.

He's sniffing them for sure. Plus, how many do what he does for $6M?

VAN decline, they don't have the cap space.

The contract is great. What's up with all the Guentzel trades recently? I'm not sure why Pens fans want him moved. I know he didn't play great in the playoffs, but he had a fantastic year.

Unfortunately not all fans of every team are that bright lol. It's highly unlikely Jake gets moved, but some Pens fans are in the Hextall camp and want the Pens to get bigger and stronger, and look, there's nothing wrong that per-se, but IMO you don't move Jake to make that happen.

On a side note, we really don't know how Hextall and Burke value every player. They may look to revamp this team in their image.
