expose mcdonagh and trade johnson

Description
Johnson is bad value but no teams would really want to take him without a steep overpayment. McDonagh has a NTC and is signed until age 36, is he worth keeping for just the next few good years? It makes sense to let him captain Seattle and get around worrying about the NTC when he's worse value in a few years, and they get him in exchange for taking Johnson in a trade. He'd likely waive his NTC to go home. The other option is to lose Foote, Cernak, or Gourde to Seattle, then have to make 1-2 more trades to clear cap space anyway, and lose even more good pieces that way (1sts, ABB, etc).

Tampa's not exposing a veteran top 4 defenceman and losing him for nothing when they're in win now mode still for at least a few years and have spent the last 2 deadlines looking for a top 4 defenceman. They're not gonna spend the next few deadlines looking for 2 top 4 defenceman. That's not how you win cups.

So what is your plan for losing 10M in cap? Because trading from the below list, given the protections they have, is going to cost a lot of other assets, and will overall cost more than just giving up McDonagh

Palat: 5.3M until 2023, 20 team trade list

Gourde: 5.167M until 2025, full NTC until 2022

Johnson: 5M until 2024, 20 team trade list

Killorn: 4.45M until 2023, 16 team no trade list

In addition to trading these guys, they're also going to lose someone good to Seattle. So is your plan to lose Cernak or Foote to Seattle, gain 3M in cap space, and then still have to trade two of Palat, Killorn, Johnson, all of whom can really limit the destinations? Having to attach a 1st to lose Johnson, since teams see how over the cap Tampa is.

Eh make it a 1st or two 2nds or whatever, then, it doesn't matter too much; the general concept is the same.

In all likelihood, Tampa works out a deal with Seattle to take Johnson. They have the prospects and need the cap space so it's worth it. That's where they'll start. After that, who knows. Maybe another Kucherov injury or something

The Kucherov injury thing only worked out like this because of the shortened season it was a surgery that TB knew the recovery time line for being Gourde and Point had the same surgery by the same surgeon with the same recovery time line.

That was a joke..

My point is, they'll shed salary with Johnson to Seattle and pay what it takes to do so. Then they'll make another move after. But they're not gonna deplete from their defence when they've been trying to add to it every year to help contend. That's counterproductive to what they wanna do

honestly i think they try seattle to take McDonagh and his 6.75 mil Johnsons 20 team trade list if you retain 1/2 makes him an asset not liability

Honestly, that's a dumb idea. If Tampa loses McDonagh, as I said, they'll need to find 2 top 4 defenceman. & if you're suggesting moving Johnson after that and using the $11.75M in cap space($6.75M + $5M) to find those defenceman, well sorry but 2 top 4 guys cost more than that.

Johnson isn't an asset at all. Everyone knows Tampa has tried to get rid of him on the past to help with the cap, and no one has bit. Tampa has played him consistently in the bottom 6 and his production has suffered because of that and because of poor play. His value has plummeted and is at best neutral, but because of Tampa's cap situation and the fact that they've made it known they're trying to move him, he's more of a negative value now. At best you're looking at what Toronto did to rid themselves of the Marleau contract, and they didn't gain any assets in that deal. At least Marleau was productive, Johnson hasn't been.

In all likelihood, Tampa uses one of Katchouk, Raddysh, Barre-Boulet, etc plus likely a 1st to get Seattle to take Johnson. Then they keep McDonagh and sign another top 4 dman in free agency. Then they'll deal with the cap after. They're allowed to go 10% over the cap in the off-season so they'll have time to make the cap work. It'll be fine easier than you think, teams always figure it out.

Lol. Cernak is no where near the level of McDonagh. There's a reason why they acquired a defenceman at the deadline.. Cernak isn't really a top 4 yet. Putting all your hopes into that bag would probably prove costly.
