If he takes a lot, then that’s sad really. He’s the captain that should not be greedy especially since he just got paid, and he should try and take a discount so they can sign and keep other players. If he takes 10+M, they won’t win another cup with him.

He's earned every penny on what he is about to make and then some. How can you be made at an athlete for asking for market value? The greatest goal scorer in the NHL got paid $9.5 mil for 13 years, while the later half of that deal, other players, players who were not as impactful during their prime as Ovi, were getting paid more.
I would love if he takes a discount (as a Caps fan), but I do not blame him whatsoever for wanting 10-11mil. That puts him right about where Tavares, Marner, Panarin are, and those are comparable players in terms of production (yes, Ovi is getting older) but also impact on their team.
Just because he is the captain doesn't mean he should take a "hometown discount". This is a business - GMs know that, players know that.

Yah well he still should if he wants another cup. It’s pretty sad if he doesn’t.
