According to LeBrun on Rielly and the Leafs

Created by: bald_and_bankrupt
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 23, 2021
Published: Jun. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) Dubas and Rielly's agent talked at the end of the season
2) Rielly willing to take little less on next contract
3) Dubas wants to get an extension before regular season
4) Trade is likely if no contract is signed before season starts
5) No money has been discussed yet
6) Negotiations start in August
7) LeBrun believes extension happens

In other words, sounds like the Leafs are out on Hamilton

I’m not sure the leafs were ever in on hamilton, considering he’s stated he doesn’t want to play in a big market.

I’d imagine the extension gets done fairly easily. If not I’m sure the Jets would be interested in rielly. What would the leafs be looking for?

With the way the playoffs went and the fact hes from toronto and with Rielly being a UFA the following season I think they were more than curious so to speak

sure Hamilton would have costed 8mill but paired with Muzzin and providing 50+ points a season that be pretty nice

Now if Morgan takes less than 5 sure we can keep him but it just seems odd as you would think he would want more than 6mill lul. Will believe it when I see it

Anyways if he takes less it does allow for Dubas in 2022 to spend some money in other areas

Will have to see how this develops

Copp likely would cost around 4 million for 5-6 years. If that’s doable for TOR, I’m sure the Jets would be interested as Copp likely won’t be signing long term here as he wants more opportunity to play. Which he’d totally get in Toronto.

I heard the leafs are gonna ask for a 1st and a prospect. But from WPG.....not sure tbh, maybe Copp and a 4th or something like that

I can’t imagine he’ll take a pay cut, but might take a discount on his next deal. Maybe longer term with lower AAV, to match the $ he’s looking for. Like 7 years at 6 million, instead of 6 years at 7 million.

Much like how last season Dubas went for Brodie instead of the big name Pietrangelo.. this year I believe Dubas will go for a less expensive option than Hamilton to upgrade that 2RD position

Eller 5 years 3.5
Laughton 5 years 3mil
Bonino 4 years 4.1

IMO a 4 year deal around 3.5-4mil should get it done.

I really don’t see the point in the Leafs resigning Rielly, even if he takes a discount. Is Sandin going to play on his off side? Or on the third pairing?

Morgan is getting traded IMO

I would love to add Copp

I think the leafs would want a first round pick and a prospect or young player I would be fine with Appleton and a first?

Appleton will probably be in Seattle, plus Copp is a player that would thrive on the leafs and his play style is something the leafs need and have lacked for a while. I'd like Copp+4th, but Appleton+1st isn't a bad option, it's more about if Appleton is a Jet after expansion

Get the trade done before the expansion draft if possible and I’m still hoping Hyman signs for 4,500,000 if he walks then yeah we would need a replacement and copp would be really nice

I saw a post that Keefe's system holds back Rielly offensively. I'm sure he would take less, but not on both $ and term. He'll probably wait for Jones and Hamilton to sign their extensions this summer. IMO if Rielly signs with the leafs it will be 7.5 mill x 7-8 years or 8.5-9 mill x 4-5 years.

If he is taking less I assume his deal is either gonna look like Morriseys or Krugs

But if he legit takes less than his current deal my guess 4.75 x 8 or something and if he does that probs gonna win contract of the year or something lul

Realistically

6.25x8 is my current guess

yeah i think he’s going to take a discount and get more term, but I think he’ll get closer to 7-7.5 mill

Has anything been mentioned about term and/or price?

I’m going to assume not, but just curious.

I actually think Keefe’s system has made him better defensively. But most certainly at the cost of his offence. Muzzin has led this team in 5v5 scoring the past two seasons. If Rielly losses his spot to Sandin on PP1 it’s even more of a reason to look at trading Morgan. I’m all for having depth on the blue line but if not this year then absolutely next year Sandin will need more mins. Having Muzzin and Rielly ahead of him doesn’t make sense. IMO he needs to be traded this summer

That’s crazy! Must be going back on his old comments. He’d have to take a hefty discount.

Exactly what EF said. He said that he also heard from people around the league say that Toronto isn't the best fit for him, which is why Friedman loves Dougie. He is the type of guy to prove people wrong, which could be good for Toronto
