I don't think it's ideal but just a theoretical option

It saves 7M$ in the first year and spreads decently

Makes it very easy to keep Appleton which is key

Do people forget the Blues were more than willing to trade Thompson just a couple of seasons removed from drafting him in the first round? Why do people think we would accept him back?
