What if AM and MM werent overpaid

Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 15, 2021
Published: Jul. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Maybe you'll come at me saying something along the lines of «well here you barely removed 900K from Matthews' cap hit and barely removed 1,4M from Marner's cap hit. So I saved around 2,3M. THAT is the crazy thing. You're not 5M away from being good with the cap. That's honestly heartbreaking.

Like it's CRAZY to me that Dubas wasn't able to:
-either lock up Marner and Matthews to longer deals like EVERYBODY does
-or just bridge then for 2-3 years and then lock them up. But no, he had to do the mix between the above 2 options and this mix stinks big time.

Matthews is 100% walking 3 years from now if the Leafs don't progress. And fact is, I haven't seen ANY overall progression from this core in 3 years, since 2018.

Why didn’t they plan for the pandemic! Dubas and Pridham should have thought that the world would stop for a year and have a flat cap for multiple years 🤦‍♂️

Except the pandemic isn't responsible for Dubas being a **** and not being able to lock up his 2 best young players like any logical person would do

Honestly think it was more Tavares that screwed the leafs. Without him Marner and Mathews likely dont out up the sophomore numbers they did and dont get salaries that are the highest in the league. By adding a 11 million dollar, ppg player to the line up when they did they jumped up the expectations around the team and got younger players to think they were deserving of high contracts.

Arizona was ready to throw everything including the kitchen sink at Matthews when he turned RFA

“The Toronto Maple Leafs 100% believed that if Auston Matthews got to July 1 last year, Arizona was going to offer-sheet him seven years, the max.” - Friedman

So technically what the Leafs lost in term they gained in cap space to build a contender…. It either or it wasn’t gonna be cheap

And Marner was coming off a 90+ point season with most Leaf fans stating he was better then Matthews who just signed a monster contract, (tbh he was) well his agent used that to his full advantage

I would argue then the mistake was not getting Matthews, Marner and nylander all extended the same summer JT signed. Rumours Marner would of signed 9 mil for 8 years so if that is true that is on Dubas.
I like Dubas but when you look back on it he really messed up playing hardball with nylander to just sign him for 7 million anwyays. I’m good with the contact but then nylander wasn’t the same player that season after sitting til December.
It’s unfortunate they weren’t all signed for 6-8 years that same summer, now we are 3 years out from Matthews and nylander needing raises or just leaving.
