Bad, the next best goalie option is probably going to cost double Vanecek, and the Caps have no cap to spare as it is. Ovi + Samsonov is going to cost...well... more than the Caps have left as it is now.

Caps are facked... they have terriblecap management. they should have trade Hags +V V to the wing forcing Seattle to pick Dillon Schultz or Jensen.

I wouldn't be too down about the replacement. I am expecting they give Zach Fucale a big chance in training camp to get the backup job. He could surprise and is only 750K for two years. Also maybe get Anderson again for the minimum possibly?

This is the second year in a row this has happened. We were forced to trade Djoos due to cap constraints last year. Although, that ended up working out pretty well as we got Sprong in that trade.

oh they have always had terrible cap management they paid 1st to recently dump Panik when we shouldn't have signed him. traded Stephenson for a 5th instead of freeing up cap elsewhere. signed Chara resulting in Seig requesting a trade... they refuse to play young players we draft. i think the last player to play consistently on the roster was Vrana from the 2014 draft... not a math guy but thats 7 years without playing a guy we drafted

Very interesting! Do you think that the day Ovechkin's gone/retired the team's mindset switches? In other words are they continually trying to keep the core up for a cup until they can't or is it deeper than this.

they currently view Ovechkin beating the goal record > winning cups. imo they should do a rebuild and let Ovechkin get 11m elsewhere. we won a cup and have some solid talent coming up.

That doesn't really make sense. Why would you sign Backstrom to a ton of money to then let Ovi (your #1 franchise player in history) walk? We aren't winning anyway with 9.2 tied to Backstrom and a barren farm. I'd rather watch Ovi retire a Cap.

Backstrom i can justify paying money to bc he was under paid for years. besides that they can move him also for a big return. Washington is now a middle of the road team. You either need to suck or be good middle doesnt get anything done

You think we can move an old and injured Backstrom for a big return? Really? No, we can't. A convincing majority of folks on Capfriendly think it was quite an overpay, and while that may not be what GMs think of it, it's evidence that is is in fact an overpay.

Backstrom is 34 this year, making too much money for too long. Ovi is still the better player, Caps are worse without him.

you can retain salary and he just scored 53p in 55gp? thats an 80 point pace....yeah backstrom at 6m would get you a big return..... or take on a bad contract to expires at a similar time... you can work your way around that. Backy never gets enough respect lol
