Neal will cost you two 1sts and you'll get nothing back.

Detroit got a 2nd from the Rangers for taking on Staal and that was one year and he was needed. Neal is two years and is not needed and the picks are much later.

Also, for a very similar contract, Ladd was traded for 2 2nds and a conditional 3rd (unlikely the condition is met).

The retention doesn't matter to Detroit, we aren't short of cap room.

Detroit isn't a charity where other teams can go and dump their unwanted players and contracts. These things have a price and Detroit only does what's best for them.
