Filling out the rest of the roster
I really like this roster. I think the problem is not just Barrie's salary cap it is a stylistic one. Barrie is a great offensive defenseman but struggles defensively. If you keep him, you are either asking Broberg (a young D) to cover for him defensively or you're asking Barrie to play 2nd pair and then leaving Bouchard and Broberg on 3rd. Two young D on their own and Barrie covering harder defensive matchups. I think having a more defensively conscious D partner for both Bouchard (Kulak) and Broberg will protect them in the early stages of their careers and help them develop but be a better combination that Barrie's offensive talents. So even if you swapped for someone of similar cap space but with a stronger defensive game, I think that would be a better approach.

Any word on when Bishop will be back? How do you see Dallas managing his cap/3 goalies if he comes back mid year?

You should have 23 skaters on your roster.
Also, it seems most likely that Klef is on LTIR. So you have 4+MM to play with if you move him there.

Also, for a very similar contract, Ladd was traded for 2 2nds and a conditional 3rd (unlikely the condition is met).

For a similar contract (Andrew Ladd), it took two 2nds and a conditional 3rd soI suspect Neal will take a 1st or 2 2nds as a start.

Detroit got a 2nd from the Rangers for taking on Staal and that was one year and he was needed. Neal is two years and is not needed and the picks are much later.</div></div>
Except in this case I retained half. So if retaining half doesn’t do it, what else is needed?

Could Gusev do this
I’m sure you can get Kahun for much less.
Also, I don’t think you need to carry three goalies this coming year with borders opening so you could burry Stalock and one D (can only carry 23 players) to add more cap space/maybe upgrade elsewhere.
Although I really like the Gusev idea.

Agreed. Get someone older on a cheaper contract like Getzlaf, Bozak, Staal…. 2ish MM.

Grubauer and Laine
Your point has no merit, all the goalies I listed had to do just that (isolation) as they came from the US. Don’t get me wrong. I think Ned is much better but I think the guys making the decisions in Edmonton don’t see it that way unfortunately.

At the time he went through waivers, Smith was hurt. In the Canadian division last year, there were a lot of 3rd goalies getting grabbed on waivers because they could not easily pull in another goalie for the minors in the US due to COVID restrictions. Edmonton claimed/lost a couple goalies on waivers (Forsberg, Grosenick, Stalock.. I may have missed one). But at the time Ned was on waivers, they were short a goalie and still passed on him. I was shocked they didn't grab him.

No way Edmonton does that. Bouchard is on their untouchable list. And if they wanted Ned, they would have taken him on waivers last year when they were short a goalie. Obviously he showed well this year but if they had any interest before this year, they would have taken him for free.

Take 4
I like the idea of trading for someone on permanent LTIR to get some extra cap space... Maybe I'll put a team together with a bunch of them and see how much I can artificially inflate the cap.
Or is there a mechanism in place to prevent that? Don't you have to get them on your roster for opening night to get the full cap benefit?

I have mentioned this a bunch of time on other posts too but, why don't you put Klef on LTIR? That would free up his cap space and allow you more room to improve other areas.
I also don't like JJ at 1.333MM. If he wants that much, I'd let him walk.

If you bury Neal and Koski then slide Klef to LTIR, you are still under the cap I believe and now you don’t have dead cap stretching out as long.

NO PICKS
For 2x 5.75 I don’t think you get it done for just 1 first. If Neal could play 3rd line minutes, maybe but last year he wasn’t even a fourth line player most nights.
Either way, the exercise was to use this years picks to clear dead weight and see what could be done. So I guess that put one of the future picks I added back on the Oilers list.
Unless that pick is then turned into someone else in trade, I don’t think anything changes roster wise.

No additional dead cap
Sure for one year Mike Smith gets that much maybe on the high end but not for two years.
As for Larson, sure I could see him getting that much but would think being 250k off is pretty close. If needed, you could probably negotiate Kahun and Marody down a bit but I wanted to be close to their minimum QO. Even Cagiula or someone similar could be had for less. Making up 250 k shouldn’t be hard.

Lots of things I don’t buy with this.
QOs for Junjar and Kahun are more than you signed them for. To avoid arbitration, this is highly unlikely.
Your 23 man roster only has 20 men.
The only trade I see here that is realistic is the Benson to Seattle in the expansion draft.
Smith for two years?
Larson for that low and that short.

Puljujarvi needs a change? He played a good chunk of last year with McDavid and played really well.
None of this benefits the oilers.
Chicago fans keep forgetting Keith is asking for a trade and right now only a couple teams meet his ask.
So Edmonton or Seattle will bargain hard (limited market). Certainly not pay extra for an overpriced contract on a guy who over the last couple years has fallen off a cliff.
Don‘t get me wrong great player once upon a time but showing serious concern with age.

Smith is gonna get more than 1MM unfortunately.
Also, you have 26 on your 23 man roster. If you move Broberg and a couple others to the AHL, you should have close to 4 MM to upgrade elsewhere or cover any additional salary you may need to sign some UFAs on your list.
