"Fixing" the D

Created by: Bwells
Team: 2016-17 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2017
Published: Feb. 18, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's more a patch than a fix, but if NYR want to contend, it's the minimum they have to do. There are more options at RHD than one would think, but if we are talking a RHD puck-moving defenseman, Mike Green comes to mind. At 6M per, he's an inconvenience for the Red Wings. Doesn't fit the model age wise, $ wise and he's even too good for them, if they decide to tank. So even if Detroit retain salary, they're saving. That said, Green is still a good player, and he has value.

Going back: a capable-ish defenseman (no one is taking Girardi), a prospect forward on a 15 game point streak, and a (good) G prospect. Halverson wasn't looking like the greatest pick, but this year he has turned it around, and a future in the NHL is likely.

A note on the line-up: Clendening is the scratch because AV doesn't know how to evaluate defensemen, not because he's worse than Girardi.

Nothing against this idea of getting Mike Green as he's an experienced Vet and is capable of being a top 4 dman. The worrisome part imo is Gropp. He's on a 15 game point streak because of Barzal who as of right now isn't deemed NHL ready by the Isles but next season will be 2nd or 3rd line C. Gropp clearly plays better with a good C as wingers should. Buchnevic is playing awful not because he isn't good, but because he's a lot better than his 4th line mates. Gropp could step in if Nash or Zucc ends up getting traded. Buch can replace one of them and Gropp can take over on line 3. It's a good trade but trading Gropp is worrisome.

Seems reasonable for a short term fix for Rangers. Some Wings won't like it, but having having Klein and additional 1.6m in cap space plus those young players, might be the best offer for Green the Wings get.
