if not build for future build for now

Created by: Dr_akin
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 11, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If we are not trading to get a 3c that could push to a 2c or top 6 winger if needed, that is young and grow with the team (Kerfoot, Dvorak, Copp) and if Bozak would take a veteran 1yr, low dollar contract, he could help the team while Poehling continues to develop and then he and Evans fights for 3/4c,

Cizikas might not be a bad option as well with a good faceoff percentage but he is smaller and the percentage isnt as good as Bozak

Unless we are trading for an offensive D-man (see what Wideman and Romanov can do), I think 3c might be the only need to round out the team, Looks very deep. ( I like Vatanen but often injured)

I don't like Lehkonen there are cheaper players available that can do what he does, I would rather trade him for any pick and sign Virtanen (I don't believe he sexualy assaulted anyone), same offensive upside but is more physical and younger or just use Perrault, arguably a better skater and I think Armia is over paid (I do like him however and would keep him)

No to Virtanen with his legal issues it's not something Montreal needs to get into right now.

Like I said I dont think he will have issues with his legal problem, and its a simple as using Perrault in his place this wasn't the crux of the build.

You are also selling low on Lehkonen he could fetch a 3rd possibly a 2nd from the right team

Habs are the home of those who have been granted second chances, sometimes first by us, sometime first by others:
Burke, Ramage, Kassian, Kovalchuk, Mailloux, Hoffman, Wideman, interest in DeAngelo but Carolina paid more than we would have for sure, the list goes on…

I’m pretty sure that both Bergevin and Molson believe that it’s not whether you fall down, but how you get back up. Even how Molson described Mailloux: “He’s a good kid who made a horrible decision.”

As much as many may think that the organization doesn’t need the headlines, I’d counter asking why it’s important to care about negative headlines? Personally, I care what the organization does in the 365 days following the selection in Mailloux’s case. My guess is the long term benefits of the education campaign they will undergo with Quebec and Canadian society will be a positive force for change and awareness. But obviously, it’s too early to judge anything. We can all set alarms in our phones 1 year out to check in with what the progress has been.

Offer sheet calculator has compensation for a $2.3mm cap hit as a 2nd round pick. Only Bergevin knows what he’s been offered for Lehkonen. But he could have gone the team elected arbitration route to get a 15% salary reduction to $1.85mm if no one was willing to pay a 2nd. I don’t imagine Bergevin let’s him go for less.

While I agree the Habs do like to give second chances and did just draft Mailloux. I feel like signing Virtanen right now with his charges being sexual as well would be too much for the organization right now.

Adjusted signing and trade, this wasn't meant to be a social perception debate, but throwing people away and cast as guilty before proven otherwise has hurt society in my eyes

Disagree. It’s clearly not the only thing, but it’s not nothing either. Lots of 1st and 3rd trades in recent years for players in that cap range of the offer sheet calculator. Agents know exactly what the levels are where they can apply pressure (when they have the leverage of other interested GMs in “their type of player.”)

I think Bergevin is focused on bringing in another a left shot center and a puck moving D right now. Virtanen, imo, isn’t a fit at all.

True. But he’s also a questionable talent on a hockey level, right now, at best. So whoever signs him right now is looking at a reclamation project on multiple levels. As such, it definitely has to also be a great fit on a hockey level, at a minimum. We are overflowing currently with right shot wingers.

based on similar players his value is around a 4th. a 3rd if someone really like him.
