Redoing Dallas Offseason

Created by: TheMooterus
Team: 2021-22 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2021
Published: Aug. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jim Nill has completely botched this offseason from a personnel perspective. Stashing Oettinger in the AHL is one of the stupidest things he's done since he's been in Dallas. Signing Suter to anything longer than a 2-year deal AND GIVING HIM A FULL NMC is not smart. Along with the unnecessary signings of Raffl & Glendening, Nill's entire offseason has left many Stars fans scratching their heads. The only move that makes sense is the signing of Hakanpaa.

For a team that Nill admits is in "win now" mode, his offseason moves sure don't reflect that. The team that Nill has put together is a team that finishes 4th/5th in the Central this season

Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Suter, Ryan
Additional Details:
Signing a 36-year old to a 4-year deal & giving him a full NMC is just stupid. Nill is hoping and praying that Suter can defy the typical post-35 year old drop off in production...and he's hoping he can defy it until he's 40.

If Nill is going to pay for a defenseman for 4 years, he should have gone after the younger McCabe for $350K more per year.
2.
DAL
VAN
  1. Holtby, Braden
Additional Details:
Just don't sign Holtby. It's not that difficult. Oettinger is already the best goalie in the organization, and proved that he can handle an extended workload at the NHL level. By signing Holtby, Jim Nill is relegating Oettinger to the AHL.

Pretty stupid move for a GM that's claimed he's in "win now" mode to run with a declining Khudobin & a declining Holtby that hasn't had a >.900 SV% season in the last 2 years.
3.
DAL
PHI
  1. Raffl, Michael
Additional Details:
Pointless signing. Stars have a half dozen players that can fill a bottom-6 role in the NHL. Signings like this are the reason Adam Macherin has already bolted to Sweden for a year.
4.
DAL
DET
  1. Glendening, Luke
Additional Details:
Another pointless vet signing. Nill is bound and determined to continue to turn Dallas into a geriatric team
5.
VAN
  1. Faksa, Radek
Additional Details:
Trade Faksa & protect Dickinson in the expansion draft

While I agree with your point on Suter, the rest of the moves made are purely "depth". These guys get to training camp wanting to earn an NHL job, and by doing so, push the young guys to work harder for it. If a younger player pushes a vet out of the lineup, that's a plus for the organization.

Agree 100%. Also, it’s not prohibited to make trades in order to improve your team. Nill seems to have become allergic to trading.

When was his last meaningful trade?

I understand the Comeau signing. It was for expansion purposes & don’t hate the signing.

Probably the Zuccarello trade back in 2019.

Yes that was a meaningful trade but I was more thinking about a trade involving multiple and quality players. A trade that would demonstrate some boldness from our GM.

Other GM seems to do these type of trade every year. Nill, usually makes very small trades and signs questionable UFA.

Oof then maybe the Spezza or Seguin trades. They were like in 2013 or 2014 or something like that.

Or July 10, 2015. Garbutt and Daley for Sharp and Johns.

That is a eternity of meaningful trade involving multiple NHL players. Is there any GM out there with less trading activities?

If BC plays less than 10 minutes and is a regular healthy scratch, that will mean that this team is playing well.

In other words, other players would perform better than him.

In other other words, I will swear a lot less in front of my TV.
