1. Devils don't need another offensive defensemen
Devils already have Subban, Smith, and Hamilton as their offensive defensemen. They just traded away Will Butcher, another offensive defensemen. Devils don't need offensive defensemen anymore.

2. Doesn't fit into future plans
Devils already have Smith, Mukamadullin, Bahl, and Hughes as their LD for the future. Rielly wouldn't be needed.

3. Will cost too much money
Devils have enough cap space right now, but won't have enough money in the future for Rielly if he extends.

4. Devils aren't paying for rentals
Devils aren't in the position to give up picks/prospects for rentals. Even if he extends, as stated above, Devils don't need him.

But what if they send Engvall and Mikheyev and Dermott with him? Can't say no then, Frick you would have to send Toronto all those guys you just mentioned above to make it fair.

Agree, they should just let their kids develop and go from there, they have plenty of offensive minded defenseman as you said, and the contract he gets could be problematic when it’s time for them to pay their players.

Yep, the devils would have to take that and run. Toronto would be out of their minds to make that deal.
