Arizona will receive the better of the two first-round picks that Montreal owns, both their own and Carolina’s (received today as compensation for Jesperi Kotkaniemi). The first-round pick is also semi-top-10 protected, meaning that if one of Montreal’s first-round selections is in the top 10 of the 2022 draft, Arizona will receive the worse of the two picks.

To me, that's a win for Arizona.

I think MTL just barely missess the playoffs, and CAR is absolutely a contender. Though possible, its not realistic. At best they're getting pick 11.

He's using that example to state that its vastly unrealistic for CAR to have a top 10 pick. Hence an obvious contender in Colorado being a lotto winner is simply not happening, so he does indeed mean MacKinnon.

The stip is Arizona gets the better of the 2 picks unless either or both are in the top 10 and then they get the worse of the 2. Only way possible would be 1 and 2 in the lottery. Not happening. Canes are a playoff team.

Zona may get 2nd overall, but it will be with their own pick lol.

It's a theoretical possibility.

As long as it's possible, it can happen

Look at my Ottawa Sens and what happened with Matt Duchene.

In that event, Arizona gets the 13th overall pick maybe.

I mean take a look at players that been flipped in Montreal. Domi was traded for a bust and then swapped for Josh Anderson, Scandella was brought in with a 4th and then sent out for a 2nd and 4th. Maybe their value does indeed increase who knows!
