I think this is the last year of the 4th line. Clutter + Martin likely don’t have it in them to be regulars past this season

Why'd Salo get so much money? This roster looks like it's ready for another ECF elimination.

Because he’ll likely be worth it, unlike Seth Jones

did he not sign an ELC yet? Is he technically a FA?

He is signed already, and will be RFA this coming offseason.

He played Pelech and Pulock on the top pair as 24 year olds. Salo and Dobson were both drafted as steady two way defenseman. By the 22-23 season Dobson will have at least 150 games of NHL experience. Salo will be 24 years old.

Idk ive always thought of salo as an offensive dman. Also dobson is weak defensively. Maybe its bc he plays with greene idk, but he doesnt win pucks. Once he has them hes solid at moving it but he only gets it if greene makes a good pass (if lucky once a game) to him and he has a little space to break it out. Pelech was a defensive defenseman and pulock was a good 2 way guy. Both things that you cant really say about salo-dobson. I think theres a better chance that its bolduc-dobson and salo-mayfield

Salo is a two way defenseman. From a scouting report on Salos defensive game:
“Salo is extremely smart in his own zone. He has very good positioning, and maintains excellent gap control. He reads the play well, and seems to anticipate where the puck could be going a step ahead of others on the ice”

Pulock was borderline elite offensively but he was slightly below average defensively the year before Trotz arrived. Dobson right now is a much better defensive player than Pulock was at age 24.

Dobson’s biggest strength out of the draft was his skating and shutdown abilities. During the 19-20 season Dobson led all isles D in a lot of defensive metrics including shot suppression. This season his defensive play was solid until he got Covid and Greene’s play was also terrible this season which played a role. Mcavoy finished bottom 3 in the league in puck battle win% , winning puck battles doesn’t mean you’re good defensively.

This from last year. Dobson was over 1 SD xGA/60 which means he was well above average at preventing quality scoring chances . This is also isolated impact so it accounts for teammates

Idk from watching him it doesnt look like that but i guess im wrong. The perfect partner for dobson (and ive wanted this for a long time) is adam pelech. That pair would be so damn good. But then we need a LD1 to fill in.

It’s extremely difficult to analyze defensive play using the eye test alone. Even experts struggle with it. I agree Pelech is a good partner for him but Pelech-Pulock have turned into arguably the best D pairing in the league so it would be tough to break them up. Salo plays a similar game as Devon Toews, not flashy but does everything well, that’s a good D for Dobson to play with. He does not need a one dimensional shutdown guy, that will stifle his development.
