Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 28, 2021
Published: Sep. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know Malkin is hurt right now, but hopefully he is back and playing well at the trade deadline. The $4.75M "retained" is pro rated salary that the Penguins will have already paid by the deadline. So the Penguins actually are not retaining money.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Malkin, Evgeni ($4,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Rental trade deadline deal if Pittsburgh is somehow out of the playoff picture (or on the fringe) and Montreal is in the playoff picture. Malkin has a "handshake deal" with the Penguins to sign back with Pittsburgh after the season is over.
PIT
  1. Norlinder, Mattias
  2. Poehling, Ryan
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (ANA)
2.
MTL
  1. 2024 7th round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. 2022 4th round pick (TBL)

So, let me get this straight, as a Habs fan you would be ok with giving up one of out top 2 LHD prospects and a good middle 6 prospect plus a pick, all the while knowing that there is no chance of Malkin resigning with Montreal and we only get 3 months worth of him? IF Montreal were solidly in the playoffs at the deadline it would be because Poehling has stepped up and solidified the 3C position at that point why even make the trade? Malkin is good but if Poehling can help Montreal earn a playoff spot by the deadline I say we just keep rolling with him as he is younger and cheaper.

Is this offer a joke? why on earth would the penguins make this trade? almost every other team in a playoff hunt could make a better offer for a HOF center that could easily put most teams over the edge to becoming true contenders. Pens would rather keep malkin and miss the playoffs than give him up for scraps.

The Penguins dont jump at that offer, but secondly and most important, wouldn;t Byron be off LTIR by then and therefore the team is over the cap?

i think you and Campabee should have a debate/steel cage death match and see who comes out on top. Very different opinions. Funny how people can have 2 different takes on the same transaction. I think you both make good points.

I know.

I would refer the Paul Byron issue to the many other trades on this website that trade Byron to Arizona (or some other cap floor team looking for picks) for picks.

1. phoning is bottom six at best
2. Malkin would be your n1 centre for the playoffs

you've never witnessed anything as good as Malkin trust me

as for the trade if we are out of playoff contention we might think about it but maybe adding an extra second or just make it a late 1st imo

Just not sure why it wasnt thrown in to validate the research on the retention on Malkin.

As far as the offer: if Poehling has shown he cant do it, it really lessens his value (that'll be twice hes been given a NHL spot and failed to deliver), but overall I think if Pitts is looking to move Malkin, they'll get far better offers elsewhere. And while I like Norlinder and think hes going to be a good NHLer, if hes still below Wideman and Kulak (and Niku) on the dpeth chart at that point, that lessens his value as well.

Malkin would never be the 1C for Montreal cause Suzuki is as good now and will be better longer.

not completely true we witnessed him and crosby be unable to overcome a tantalizing Suzuki Danault duo lol

In all honesty this could be a solid move by the pens, whether it was this specific deal or another, but move malkin as a rental grab two solid near nhl ready prospects and then resign him in the offseason. I know its not something that happens in hockey but much more common in baseball and might help extend the pens window if they have in influx of young players coming up in the coming year or two.
Of course this would all only work if the pens were comfortable sacrificing one year as a wash, which they wouldnt do.

as always people undervaluing geno.... we are used to it dw.

the play in round geno shouldn't have even played and it was the rest of the teams fault in a particular circumstance it doesn't even count

I love Suzuki but geno is on another planet obviously not Long term cuz geno will retire in 3 years more or less

wasnt seriously comparing the two Geno one of the top players of the past decade of course hes he on a different level. But still think theres upside for the pens making a move like this if they grab two or three solid prospects and resign geno after the season then they are locked in for his final few seasons .
